Defesa: Curitiba, 23/06/2016 / Inclui referências : f. 124-128 / Resumo: A seguinte pesquisa visa explorar a morte na obra Ulysses, de James Joyce, a partir dos conceitos psicanalíticos do luto e da melancolia, que, segundo Freud (1920), são dois estados ligados à morte. Para explorar cada um desses temas, fez-se necessário analisar a morte a partir de como Bloom, Dedalus e Molly lidam com a perda. Embora haja semelhanças entre o comportamento dessas personagens, elas divergem na forma como lidam com seus respectivos problemas. Além disso, apesar dos pontos em comum, cada um está passando por um tipo de dor: enquanto Dedalus está passando pela experiência do luto, ou seja, da perda real de uma pessoa amada (a mãe), Bloom e Molly parecem tentar afastar um princípio de melancolia ocasionado pelo problema conjugal - e, assim, estão vivenciando outro tipo de perda e frustração. Por outro lado, Dedalus parece experimentar a melancolia por meio do relacionamento conturbado com o pai e da decepção com Mulligan, enquanto Molly e Bloom evocam a memória do filho morto e de como o luto deste parece ter interferido negativamente na vida do casal. Dessa maneira, a análise da obra sob esse viés permitiu perceber de que maneira as frustrações de cada uma das três personagens principais se interligam e movem a obra. Perda do Objeto Amado. / Abstract: This research aims to explore the death in the novel Ulysses, by James Joyce, from the psychoanalytical concepts of mourning and melancholia. According to Freud (1920), those are two states linked to the death. To explore each one of these issues, it was necessary to examine death from like Bloom, Dedalus and Molly deal with the loss. Although there are similarities between the behaviors of these characters, they differ in how they deal with their problems. Moreover, despite of the commonalities, each of these characters is experiencing a kind of pain: while Dedalus is going through the mourning experience, that is, the actual loss of a loved one (the mother), Bloom and Molly try to ward off the melancholia caused by the marital problem - and thus, they are experiencing another kind of waste and frustration. On the other hand, Dedalus seems to experience the melancholy through troubled relationship with his father and disappointment with Mulligan, while Molly and Bloom evoke the memory of their dead son and how this loss seems to have interfered negatively in their marital life. Thus, the novel's analysis in this perspective allowed realizing how the frustrations of each main character intertwine and move the novel. Keywords: Twentieth-Century Literature. Psychoanalysis.
