Male song and sexual selection in the European starlingMountjoy, Donald James January 1994 (has links)
The function of the complex song of the European Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) was examined. Song playback experiments showed that both male and female starlings were attracted by song, and complex song inhibited males from entering nestboxes. Wild starlings (at least two years old when first recorded) showed extensive changes in the composition of their song phrase repertoires and most also increased the size of their repertoires, which will result in a correlation between age and repertoire size in this species. Females prefer males that have more complex song, and this preference remained significant when preferences for certain nest sites were controlled. Males with larger repertoires did not spend more time incubating or make more feeding visits to nestlings than did males with smaller repertoires. The evolution of complex song in the European starling is consistent with an age-indicator model of sexual selection, in which aspects of male quality correlated with age are advertised by the complexity of male song.

In the evaluation of the bean axial flow harvester it was studied the energy consumption, the processing capacity, and the losses in the harvesting process, the quality of harvested product and the noise generated by the tractor-harvester system. The mechanical separation process analysis was done by using a mathematical model, the probability of separating grains from the supporting parts of the plant was assumed proportional to the energy necessary for threshing and for transmitting this energy through the material other than grain layer. The work was done in the Agricultural Mechanization Laboratory of the Department of Agricultural Engineering, Universidade Federal de Vicosa and in the MIAC, COTRAME e AEMCO companies and also in the Experimental Field and Agricultural Automation Laboratory of Embrapa Milho e Sorgo. The tests were performed for beans of “Carioca” cultivar and using a pull type bean harvester, “Double Master” model. This harvester has an axial flow threshing system. During the tests the following variables were analyzed: a) number of bean rows in each harvesting line (4, 7 e 10 rows); b) the harvester speed (4, 7 e 10 km/h); c) the rotation of the threshing cylinder (420 e 540 rpm) and d) the product moisture content (10,65 ± 0,25 e 14,10 ± 0,81% wet basis). In the tests the torque and speed of PTO, the force necessary to pull the machine, the harvesting capacity, the noise generated by the tractor-harvester and the grain losses of the harvester were measured. Grain samples of the harvester tank were taken for measuring the purity, the mechanical damage index, the germination and vigor of the kernels. The tests were performed using 3x3x2 factorial type, where three different number of bean rows in each harvesting line, three different harvester speeds and two different speed of the threshing cylinder were used according to on an entirely randomized design, with two replications. Experimental data were analyzed by using the response surface method. Based on this analysis the following conclusions were taken. The power to pull with the tank full of grains was 7.90 kW. The PTO power needed in the machine operation was 45.28 kW. The harvesting capacity increased linearly with the increase of the feeding rate, the higher value obtained was 6.56 t/h. The specific energy consumption obtained was 2.46 kWh/t. The header loss was higher h t an in any other part of the harvester and represented 49.2% of the total loss. The threshing and separating was 44.6% and the cleaning loss was 6.2% of the total loss. The lowest value of harvesting loss was 3.02%. The germination, vigor and purity of the seeds increased with the increase of the feeding rate. The value of these quality parameters was higher at the 420 rpm than at the 540 rpm PTO speed. The grain damage decreased with the increase of the feeding rate and with the reduction of the threshing cylinder speed. The noise level produced by the tractor-harvester system was higher than 85 dBA that is considered the highest value established by the NR-15 standards for 8 hours of continuous exposition to a worker. The noise level decreased with the increase of the feeding rate and increased with the engine speed. The noise level decreased as the distance from the tractor-harvester increased. The rear part of the system was the one that was subject to the highest noise level. The implemented model for simulating the threshing and separating process was validated, the average difference between the experimental and the simulated values was 1.78%. The grain moisture content had no effect on the threshing and separating efficiency of the harvester. / Dissertação importada do Alexandria
