Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited. / Setup is defined as the superelevation of mean water surface within the surfzone and is caused by the reduction in wave momentum shoreward of the breaking point and compensating positive pressure gradient. Data were acquired north of Scripps Canyon on a gently sloping section of beach, which was homogenous in along-shore morphology, during the Nearshore Canyon Experiment, 2004. Pressure sensors were deployed both above and below the bed. Wave heights and radiation stress (wave-induced momentum) were calculated using linear theory transfer functions. Wave heights measured using pressure sensors in the water column had a positive bias compared with the buried pressure sensors, which it is presumed due to the Bernoulli effect of flow past the orifices. Predicted setup based on numerically solving the cross-momentum equation forced with the measured radiation stresses underestimates the observed setup by 40 percent in the mean. This thesis sets out to explore the effects on the dynamic response of a hybrid trolley system employed in ship to shore cargo transfer operating in a realistic short crested irregular seaway. Compared to the uni-directional long crested waves, the multi-directional nature of short crested waves enhances the realism of the modeling. A standard cosine-squared spreading law was added to the two-parameter Bretschneider spectrum. The results provide added data on the coupled system response in all directions and moderate any overestimation that may be derived from simply using long crested waves. / Republic of Singapore Navy author.

The goal of this research project is to determine the fractal nature, if any, which surface water waves exhibit when viewed on a microscopic scale. Due to the relatively recent development of this area of mathematics, a brief introduction to the study of fractal geometry, as well as several examples of fractals, are included in this paper. From that point, this paper addresses the specific situation of a surface wave as it nears the breaking point and attempts to detect the fractal structure of a wave at this given point when viewed on a microscopic scale. This is done from both a physical standpoint based on observations at the Hinsdale Wave Facility at Oregon State University and at Cape Perpetua, Oregon on the Pacific Coast, and from a theoretical standpoint based on a spring model. / Graduation date: 1992
