Automatic speaker recognition by linear prediction : a study of the parametric sensitivity of the model

The application of the linear prediction Model for speech waveform analysis to context-independent automatic speaker recognition is explored, primarily in terns of the parametric sensitivity of the model. Feature vectors to characterize speakers are formed from linear prediction speech parameters computed as inverse filter coefficients, reflection coefficients or cepstral coefficients, and also power spectrum parameters via Fast Fourier Transform coefficients. The comparative performance of these parameters is investigated in speaker recognition experiments. The stability of the linear prediction parameters is tested over a range of model order from p=6 to p=30. Two independent speech databases are used to substantiate the experimental results. The quality of the automatic recognition technique is assessed in a novel experiment based on a direct performance comparison with the human skill of aural recognition. Correlation is sought between the performance of the aural and automatic recognition methods, for each of the four parameter sets. Although the recognition accuracy of the automatic system is superior to that of the direct aural technique, the error distributions are highly variable. The performance of the automatic system is shown to be empirically based and unlike the intuitive human process. An extended preamble to the description of the experiments reviews the current art of automatic speaker recognition, with a critical consideration of the performance of linear prediction techniques. As supported by our experimental results, it is concluded that success in the laboratory rests upon a rather fragile foundation. Application to problems beyond the controlled laboratory environment is seen, therefore, to be still more precarious.

Condition Monitoring for Rotational Machinery

<p>Vibrating screens are industrial machines used to sort aggregates through their high rotational accelerations. Utilized in mining operations, they are able to screen dozens of tonnes of material per hour. To enhance maintenance and troubleshooting, this thesis introduces a vibration based condition monitoring system capable of observing machine operation. Using acceleration data collected from remote parts of the machine, software continuously detects for abnormal operation triggered by fault conditions. Users are to be notified in the event of a fault and be provided with relevant information.</p> <p>Acceleration data is acquired from a set of sensor devices that are mounted to specified points on the vibrating screen. Data is then wirelessly transmitted to a centralized unit for digital signal processing. Existing sensor devices developed for a previous project have been upgraded and integrated into the monitoring system. Alternative communication technologies and the utilized Wi-Fi network are examined and discussed.</p> <p>The condition monitoring system's hardware and software was designed following engineering principles. Development produced a functional prototype system, implementing the monitoring process. The monitoring technique utilizes signal filtering and processing to compute a set of variables that reveal the status of the machine. Decision making strategies are then employed as to determine when a fault has occurred.</p> <p>Testing performed on the developed monitoring system has also been documented. The performance of the prototype system is examined as different fault scenarios are induced and monitored. Results and descriptions of virtual simulations and live industrial experiments are presented. Analysis of the brainstem auditory evoked potentials in neurological disease

Many phenomena in the BAEP are difficult to explain on the basis of the accepted hypothesis of its origin (after Jewett, 1970). The alternative mechanism of origin to which these phenomena point is summation of oscillations. Therefore, simulation of the BAEP by a mathematical model consisting of the addition of four sine waves was tested. The model did simulate a normal BAEP as well variations in the waveform produced by reversing click polarity. This simulation gives further clues to the origin of the BAEP. The four sine waves begin simultaneously; corresponding BAEP oscillations must, therefore, originate from a single structure. These oscillations begin in less than half a millisecond after the click. This suggests that the structure from which they arise is outside the brainstem. This alternative mechanism indicates that wave latencies do not reflect nervous conduction between discrete nuclei, and interpretation of BAEP abnormality need to be reconsidered. It also implies that mathematical frequency analysis is more appropriate, but this could be applied only when these methods have been perfected. Meanwhile, through visual analysis and recognition of oscillations, abnormality can be detected and described in terms that may have physiological significance.

Abstract This thesis focuses on topographic mapping of rock formations with the use of new technologies in a comprehensive manner, from airborne laser scanning (ALS) data acquisition and processing in rocky terrains, followed by their processing to the content of topographic databases and their cartographic processing in maps. The introduction discusses issues of importance for practice, and the relation between topographic mapping of rocks and other fields of human activity. The ALS section describes products for topographic mapping of rocks derived from ALS data, and discusses the specifics of ALS data acquisition and processing in wooded rugged terrain. Existing solutions of this problem are explained and their limitations are identified. Author's own approaches to solving this task are presented as case studies, including three made a further three designed experiments with ALS data processing and evaluation of their results. Recommendation regarding mapping of sandstone landscapes in Czechia have been also addressed. The topographic section describes the current representation of rocks and related objects in the ZABAGED database (Czech national digital topographic database), explains the historical context, analyzes this data and identifies their shortcomings in relation to the ALS.
