The Development of Relations to Education in the 17th Century in the Context of Burgher Testaments (the Example of New Prague Town) Abstract Early modern testaments represent a unique source of information about many areas of life at a given historical period. They are frequently used in various areas of historical research, including Czech historiography and its new cultural history. Although the cultural history covers many topics, surprisingly, the field of education has been somewhat forgotten. The testaments, which unite the official information and personal testimonies, provide a unique chance to see the attitude of the society towards education in a historical context of a certain era. The testaments might become important especially when researching those periods of the development of scholarly systems and education that have been overlooked by historians, e.g. the development of town schools; respectively, the development of urban education in the period after the Battle of White Mountain (1620). The limited interest of historians has been caused mainly by the lack of information sources that could explain the changes in the organization of the newly formed confessional educational system after the Battle of White Mountain. Mineralogy and Geochemistry of Anorogenic Granitic Miarolitic Pegmatites Associated with the White Mountain Intrusive Suite, New Hampshire

Subvolcanically emplaced granitic, miarolitic pegmatites associated with the White Mountain Igneous Province (WMIP), New Hampshire, were sampled and analyzed using modern analytical techniques including X-ray fluorescence, electron microprobe, scanning electron microscopy, and direct-coupled plasma spectrophotometry. Analytical results suggest that all the sampled miarolitic pegmatites from this study are petrogenetically related to the same intrusive suite, the WMIP. Based on the geochemical data, all the samples formed in an anorogenic tectonic setting and are rift-related. They are classified as NYF-type and plot in the “within plate granite” field on tectonic discrimination diagrams. The majority of the samples are peraluminous, A1-type granites. The trace element abundances on the spider diagram and chondrite-normalized diagram, which include a pronounced negative Eu anomaly and REE enrichments, are consistent with these miarolitic pegmatites resulting from a strongly fractionated granitic parental melts, but less fractionated than the classic NYF-systems such as South Platte (Simmons et al. 1987) and the Wausau Syenite Complex (Meyers et al. 1984).

The topic of the dissertation is a reconstruction of organisation structure and personnel overview of the Superior Land Court in Bohemia between 1541-1620. The thesis is divided into two parts of the research. In the first part, the court is examined from perspective of administration history and history of justice. The aim is to reconstruct the structure of courts as an independent institution within the organisation of the provincial administration in Bohemia prior to the Battle of White Mountain. Position of court within the structure of noble courts before 1620, as well as the subject of location, time frame and the process of judicial hearing, the topic of casting and seating arrangements or subject of the occupation and release of judicial posts is being dealt with in its sub-chapters. This part is based on normative sources of the central authorities and sources of assessor's personal nature. Judges - as a group of individual assessors within the court are examined in the other part. The aim is to find and identify all personnel appointed for the function within the Court associate justice (the Chief Clerk; Juror without the Superior Land Court). This study focused on a single alternative school program with a strong outdoor component and featuring a theoretical and practical orientation very much concerned with personal relationships. Data were sought regarding this program with the intent of developing possible formats for alternative school programs. The case study approach was employed to gather and report data. It permitted the investigator to observe, interact, and record the multiple phenomena. The Theory of Personal Process was the framework utilized to observe the relationships between student and teacher. This theory was made up of five key words: (1) Contact, (2) Consult, (3) Find, (4) Share, and (5) Accompany. The study detailed the personal school relationships of the students and teacher. The investigator, as participant/observer, was the instructor of each of the five students. The investigator maintained records of interaction with the students. Furthermore, he had access to journals, term papers, and other written materials produced by the students. Each case study was presented as a specific phase of the alternative school. A specific student was described as he interacted with others in that phase of the program. The description of the student's relationship with the teacher was also correlated to the Theory of Personal Process. Optional formats for alternative school programs were developed from the case studies. The program featured the following phases: (1) Orientation, (2) Group, (3) Outdoor Experiences, (4) Classroom, (5) Creativity, and (6) Community. The key to the success of each phase was determined to be the relationship between the teacher and student. This relationship fostered a support basis for the student which, in turn, provided the necessary freedom to learn. The school was not so much an educational unit as it was a social unit, a "family."

Understanding the Sunrise Ceremony as a repository of cultural traditions and values: an exploration of ritual as a means for studying the health of the Apache people

The intent of this exploratory study was to discover the cultural significance of an Apache ritual, the Sunrise Ceremony, as it relates to the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of the Apache individual, family, and community at large. The ethnographic methodology was used to gather data because this design provided the most systematic and flexible process to generate the widest range of information necessary for describing this culture from the native's point of view. Four culturally relevant domains were developed and analyzed to reveal five cultural themes, including "It's my strength," "Women are the core of living here," "It Tells You the Story of the Beginning," and "Change is Sad--Alcohol is Bad." The findings suggest that because the Sunrise Ceremony is central to the Apache way of life, its values and culture, an understanding of the Sunrise Ceremony can assist in the development of accurate nursing assessments and successful interventions to improve the collective health and well being of the Apache people. Additionally, recommendations for nursing practice and further research are proposed.

Managing Boundaries, Healing the Homeland: Ecological Restoration and the Revitalization of the White Mountain Apache Tribe, 1933 – 2000

The main argument of this dissertation is that the White Mountain Apache Tribe's appropriation of ecological restoration played a vital role in reinstituting control over knowledge production and eco-cultural resources on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation in the second half of the twentieth century. As a corollary, I argue that the shift in knowledge production practices from a paternalistic foundation to a community-based approach resulted in positive consequences for the ecological health of the Apachean landscape and Apache culture. The democratization of science and technology on the reservation, therefore, proved paramount to the reestablishment of a relatively sustainable Apache society. Beginning with the Indian New Deal, the White Mountain Apache slowly developed the capacity to employ ecological restoration as an eco-political tool to free themselves from a long history of Euro-American cultural oppression and natural resource exploitation. Tribal restoration projects embodied the dual political function of cultural resistance to and cultural exchange with Western-based land management organizations. Apache resistance challenged Euro-American notions of restoration, nature, and sustainability while maintaining cultural identity, reasserting cultural autonomy, and protecting tribal sovereignty. But at the same time, the Apache depended on cultural exchange with federal and state land management agencies to successfully manage their natural resources and build an ecologically knowledgeable tribal workforce. Initially adopting a utilitarian conservation model of land management, restoration projects aided the creation of a relatively strong tribal economy. In addition, early successes with trout, elk, and forest restoration projects eventually granted the Tribe political leverage when they sought to reassume control over reservation resources from the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Fish and Wildlife Service. Building on this foundation, Apache restoration work significantly diverged in character from the typical Euro-American restoration project by the 1990s. While striving toward self-sufficiency, the Tribe hybridized tribal cultural values with Western ecological values in their restoration efforts. These projects evolved the tripartite capacity to heal ecologically degraded reservation lands, to establish a degree of economic freedom from the federal government, and to restore cultural traditions. Having reversed their historical relationship of subjugation with government agencies, the Apache currently have almost full decision-making powers over tribal eco-cultural resources. / Ph. D.

The diploma thesis deals with Ottoman invasions into Central Europe in the Pre-White Mountain period, bounded by the years 1526 (Battle of Mohács) and 1606 (the end of the 15-year war). The main focus is on the war operations in the Hungarian battlefields and the associated expeditions from the Habsburg constitution. The situation was not only about the warriors who experienced the battlefield, but also the inhabitants of the Kingdom of Bohemia, especially the Margraviate of Moravian. The representatives of the two groups experienced, until then, an unknown situation and had to somehow behave and react to it. The professional interpretation is continuously followed by the didactic part intended for secondary school teachers, which transforms the theme into a school substance. In conclusion, there is also a sample educational edition concerning about a dozen sources corresponding to the structure of the work.

This thesis in historical-anthropological point of view deals with the ways of reception of ?miles christianus? ideal among Bohemian lower noblemen during the second half of the 16th Century. The medieval ideal of ?miles christianus? was revived in connection with new Ottoman Empire expansion in the South-East Europe. The theme is studied in case of Šťastný Václav Pětipeský of Chýše and Egrberk, a chosen lower nobleman. The attention was concentrated on the reconstruction of nobleman?s inner life and changes in thinking during his whole lifetime with additional insight into the history of Pětipeští of Chýše and Egrberk noble family. The paper contributes to the study of everyday life, political activities and thinking of Bohemian lower nobility before the Bohemian revolt in the context of ?new political history? research.
