Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / This thesis explored the significance of the 1969 Woodstock festival and its anniversary festivals as indicated through media use of iconic and popular photographs. The literature review examines the role of iconic and journalistic images in the collective memory of historic events. The dynamic interplay of collective memory and images forms the theoretical backbone of the thesis, which applies semiotic analysis to interpret the meaning and significance of three significant photographs from the festivals. Results indicate that photographs from the original festival are icons forming the template against which photographs from later festivals can be understood and read. Magister Artium - MA / The aim of the study was to establish why the sudden emergence of numerous storefront Neo-Pentecostal churches, in the suburb of Woodstock, Cape Town, were found to be attracting large numbers of members while mainstream churches were closing down or struggling to survive. Over and above the fact that the Neo- Pentecostal churches are flourishing, the sheer number of them, was a further cause for investigation into this phenomenon. The majority of these congregations proved to have sub-Saharan ties (Nigerian in particular) and attracted membership largely of a similar background. This study looks at this phenomenon from a thorough understanding of the history of liturgy and particularly Pentecostal customs and attempts to place these churches in their social and historical context. The main thrust of this thesis, however, is an analysis of the distinctive and very prominent material features of these churches and their worship services which not only sets them apart from other Pentecostal and mainstream churches, but may offer an explanation of their popularity in this community. This study is undertaken through the close analysis of the worship services of seven Neo-Pentecostal churches in Woodstock and application of Ninian Smart's dimensions of religious practice, with specific reference to what he calls the Material Dimension. At least one worship service in each congregation was recorded on video and great sensitivity was exercised here in the physical recordings and in obtaining the written consent of the leaders of these respective congregations to use the data obtained.

Thematically this paper falls into the topic of second part of book being written by doc. Jurková Prague soundscapes, which looks into modes of remembering. This paper deals with one of these modes, which is music as medium of remembering. It is a case study, that inquires reminiscing of in-group of people, that formed around the year 2003 in music bar Woodstock in Prague. The central link for this group, or using the term of Thomas Turino, cultural cohort, was western popular music of the 1960s and bar, wher the group regularly met. The paper examines two levels that interconnect these memories and inquires what role does the music play in memories of the members now, when the bar has come through series of changes. The first one is remembering on indivudual level, remembering the times of discovering the 60s music, and second is the period of the "golden age" of the bar in it's beginning. There is an important distinction between two ways in which it is possible to look back though music - revival, which is by nature activist and nostalgia, which is passive. Theoretically, apart from classic Merriam's three part model, is this worke based on the concept of collective memory of Maurice Halbwachs. Magister Artium - MA / This mini-thesis attempts to analyse the way in which Van Kalker photographs enabled representations of the self and allowed sitters a means through which to assert themselves visually especially when considered against a backdrop fraught with the socio-economic and political tensions of apartheid. The Van Kalker Studio, started by the late J. G. Van Kalker in 1937 at 47 Victoria Street, Woodstock became one of the most popular photo studios in Cape Town. Despite the effects of apartheid legislation such as the Group Areas Act (1950), the studio retained its prominence as an institution in which to mark memorable occasions. I have selected these photographs because it has become pivotal to consider how these intimate, beautiful and complex photographs speak to questions of the personal and the familial within an unfolding history of the city of Cape Town. By considering the Van Kalker photographs not only as mere images but as material objects with historical traces that are enmeshed in highly emotive processes of production, usage, exchange, storage, and collection, it creates the possibility that meaning can be found in the way in which photographs are presented, and how they are appropriated and disseminated. Although the significance of photographs as material objects has been largely overlooked or fleetingly explored, I intend to address that loss of material understanding in the thesis by regarding the Van Kalker photographs both as images and material objects that co-exist together. In pushing the argument of the thesis further, I will argue that through the display of Van Kalker photographs as material objects in prominent positions in the domestic interior, it serves as poignant reminders of personal and familial relations. Through an exploration of the Van Kalker photographs and the way in which they were appropriated, this thesis aims to weave an ephemeral visual seam across time and space, one that especially connects those that had theirphotographs taken at the Van Kalker studio despite their geographical dis/location.

This thesis examines the spatial distribution of church members of two suburban mega churches in Atlanta. The research question concerns why people are choosing to drive thirty minutes or more to attend a mega church. A cost-benefit analysis weighs the costs of going to a distant church against the benefits of attending those churches. Examination focuses on the worship style, as well as the sense of community imparted by the two churches. The author also examines demographic factors such as gender, age, marital status, and socio-economic factors such as race, education, and occupation. The findings of the analysis demonstrate that the two mega churches are successful in providing the sense of community that suburban residents seek by offering an active small group environment.
