This study focuses on analyzing if teaching materials such as textbooks in the course Swedish as a second language contains elements of the Curriculum Circle presented in genre pedagogy. It also analyses what type of genres are present in said teaching materials and if they represent the genres present in the curriculum. Genre pedagogy is a theory that focuses on establishing knowledge in different language patterns, structure and purpose different texts might have. The idea is that the more a student know of the structure and purpose of a certain text, it is more likely that the student will be able to reproduce said text in everyday life and in the right context. A textual content analysis was used to accomplish this study. To see if there were any elements of the Curriculum circle, we constructed questions for a qualitative analysis based of the four phases of the circle model. These question where then used to analyze chapters that focused on writing in each textbook. To see what genres are present in each textbook a qualitative analysis with quantitative characteristics were used. Textual extracts in each textbook were analyzed and categorized based on the description of genre in Rose & Martin (2013) genre map. The results show that the textbooks contain varying amounts of elements from the Curriculum circle with support and cooperative construction of text being the least featured element. Furthermore, the results show that the content regarding writing genres corresponds to the contents of the curriculum in three out of four textbooks. The content regarding reading genres corresponds to the contents of the curriculum in all the textbooks of interest.
