Esta dissertação tem o objetivo de investigar o processo de construção da cidade de Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, no final do século XIX. Construída a partir de um projeto de inspiração modernizador cujos parâmetros positivistas de higienização e racionalização do espaço urbano estiveram em voga naquele momento, Belo Horizonte se constitui um caso de época instigante para compreendermos as ideias e as representações sobre cidades no Brasil. Se neste período parte da nossa formação social se deslocou da esfera rural/patriarcal para o núcleo mais urbano, não é de se estranhar que foi na cidade que ocorreram os maiores incentivos para a sua modernização. A construção de Belo Horizonte tenta iluminar como isso se configurou no plano local tendo em vista um período de formação da nação bastante específico: o final do século XIX e início do XX. O caso mineiro contou com suas particularidades e foi marcada por disputas locais de grupos oligárquicos, que buscavam poder político para se afirmar no núcleo dirigente do Estado. Por outro lado, a cidade construía pouco a pouco sua vida social a partir de iniciativas embrionárias como jornais, bibliotecas, livrarias, bares e cafés. / This thesis aims to investigate the process of building the city of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, in the late nineteenth century. Constructed from a modernizer inspired design whose positivist parameters of hygiene and rationalization of urban space were in vogue at that time, Belo Horizonte constitutes a case of instigating the time to understand the ideas and representations of cities. If this period part of our social training has shifted from rural sphere / patriarchal to the more urban core, it is not surprising that it was in the cities that have occurred the greatest incentives for modernization. The construction of Belo Horizonte trying to light as it is configured at the local level in view of a period of formation of very specific nation. The mining case had its peculiarities and was marked by local disputes, oligarchic groups seeking political power to assert the state\'s leading core. On the other hand, the city built little by little their social life from embryonic initiatives such as newspapers, libraries, bookstores, bars and cafes.
