Fostering Academic Social Networks in Distance Education during the Introductory Study Phase

Digital Education: OER H.3 / From Point 1 Introduction:
Social integration is regarded as one of the most decisive factors for students’ retention (Isleib, Woisch & Heublein, 2019; Tinto, 1975). This is especially challenging in distance education settings. Due to COVID-19 it gained importance to all higher educational institutions (Rinn et al., 2022). The high investments in digitalization are one reason why there will be no complete return to the classroom.
Rather the quick turn to online teaching in the course of the pandemic has to be replaced by elaborated concepts (Luebcke, Bosse, Book & Wannemacher, 2022). In conclusion, the relevance of social integration at a distance has increased.
