Nyckelord: erfarenheter, familj, föreställningar, innehållsanalys, intervjustudie, sjuksköterska, systemteori / The time that patients spend in hospital is progressively decreasing which shifts the responsibility for patient care to the family. As a result this increases the demand on nurses during their interaction with families. The aim of this qualitative interview study was to illuminate nurses’ conceptions about and experiences of families and the family’s role in health care. Six individual interviews were conducted with nurses from two medical wards. The interview material was analyzed by using qualitative content analysis. The results showed that nurses were not unanimous about what constitutes a family and viewed the family both as a resource and a hindrance. The nurses felt that they had a responsibility for both the family and the patient but due to time pressure and the fact that the patient was the main focus of their work, the family had a low priority. This study shows that nurses both influence and are influenced by the family and become part of an integrated family system. It is therefore not possible to disregard the nurses’ responsibility for the family and the relationship between the nurse and the family needs to be discussed further. Keywords: conceptions, content analysis, experiences, family, interview, nurse, system theory
