Previous issue date: 2017-02-21 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The present work seeks to investigate the paths that led to the formation of urban spaces
linked to Jesuit churches and Jesuit settlements in Brazil during the first centuries of Portuguese
domination.
These sites maintain their design and relevance as spaces of contemporary cities and
remain, from their earliest formations, linked to the territories of the indigenous villages, existing
before the arrival of the European colonizer. In most of the urban formations studied in this
research, I found that the buildings had several modifications, often even with a total
transformation compared to the design of the original building. However, the urban spaces facing
the Jesuit complexes, the adros and the squares, in most cases, are preserved in their original
forms and dimensions. The typology of the buildings bordering the squares varies greatly in scale,
but the space of the square remains preserved.
The methodology for this research was based on the analysis and systematic study of the
conformation of these urban spaces, squares of the Jesuit churches, as well as the collection of
historical maps, examination of documents and Jesuit letters, as well as studies and
interpretations based on historiography of the Jesuits, the Amerindian populations at the time of
colonization, history of Portugal and Brasil, at the time of colonization, in order to highlight the
history of the spaces created by Jesuit churches and settlements for contemporary cities. These
spaces form not only a relation of uses and meanings with the urban scale of the contemporary
city, but also with the regional and national scale. This value of the urban space is a sum of
elements of the territory, the design, strategy, and program of the Society of Jesus for catechesis,
as well as the historical uses and events that have taken place in these sites. The urban spaces, as
well as the historical buildings listed by the patrimony preservation organs in Brazil, deserve
special attention, since they are the fundamental piece to which the other urban elements
aggregate and qualify. / O presente trabalho procura investigar os caminhos que levaram à formação dos
espaços urbanos ligados às igrejas e aos aldeamentos jesuíticos no Brasil nos primeiros séculos
da dominação portuguesa, e sua permanência na cidade contemporânea.
Esses locais mantêm seu desenho e sua relevância como espaços das cidades brasileiras
e permanecem, desde suas primeiras formações, e principalmente, sempre ligadas aos
territórios originais das aldeias indígenas existentes, antes da chegada do colonizador europeu.
Na maior parte das formações urbanas estudadas nesta pesquisa, verifiquei que os
edifícios sofreram várias modificações, muitas vezes até com uma transformação total em
relação ao desenho original do edifício. No entanto, os espaços urbanos frontais aos conjuntos
jesuíticos, em sua maior parte, estão preservados nas suas formas e dimensões originais. A
tipologia das edificações lindeiras às praças varia bastante em escala, mas o espaço da praça se
mantém. A metodologia para esta investigação partiu da análise e do estudo sistemático da
conformação destes espaços urbanos, praças e adros das igrejas jesuíticas, além do
levantamento de mapas históricos, exame de documentos e cartas jesuíticas, assim como de
estudos e interpretações a partir da historiografia referente aos jesuítas, à Portugal e ao Brasil, às
populações indígenas à época da colonização, com o intuito de evidenciar a história dos
espaços criados pelas igrejas e aldeamentos jesuíticos para as cidades contemporâneas. Esses
espaços formam não só uma relação de usos e significados com a escala urbana da cidade
contemporânea, mas também com a escala regional e nacional, além de sua própria rede de
significados particulares, que, por si, já denotam uma importância histórica, artística e urbana.
Este valor do espaço urbano é uma somatória de elementos do território, da história da
colonização brasileira, do desenho, do projeto, da estratégia e do programa da Companhia de
Jesus para a catequização, somados aos usos e eventos históricos que se sucederam nesses
sítios. Os espaços urbanos, assim como os edifícios históricos tombados pelos órgãos de
preservação do Patrimônio no Brasil, merecem uma atenção especial, pois eles são a peça
fundamental à qual os outros elementos urbanos se agregam e se qualificam.
