Bakgrund: Stroke har så hög prevalens i Sverige att det klassas som en folksjukdom. Följderna kan innebära kognitiva och fysiska funktionshinder och det blir även en omställning i livet för de drabbade. Den grundutbildad sjuksköterska kan möta patienter som drabbats av stroke på många olika vårdinstanser och en ökad förståelse av patienternas upplevelsers kan förbättra möjligheten till en holistisk omvårdnad. Syfte: Att beskriva hur patienter upplever funktionsnedsättning efter stroke. Metod: En litteraturstudie baserat på 10 kvalitativa artiklar med vetenskaplig grund. Analysen av artiklarna genomfördes med innehållsanalys. Begränsad autonomi, Utmaningar vid rehabilitering samt Ett behov av att hantera funktionsnedsättningen. Begränsad autonomi utmärkte sig både som den fysiska inskränkningen men även som grunden till nedsatt psykiskt mående. Utmaningar i rehabilitering kantades av såväl framtidstro som orealistiska förväntningar vilket gjorde många sårbara för motgångar. Behovet av att hantera funktionsnedsättningen var utmärkande hos samtliga patienter, vissa behöver mer stöd från omgivningen och andra litade mer på sin egen styrka. Konklusion: Upplevelserna av funktionsnedsättning för patientgruppen var initialt beroende av hur autonomin påverkats efter stroken. Sekundärt till det fanns det variationer i patienternas upplevda styrkor, sociala skyddsnät och vilja att återhämta sig. Den grundutbildade sjuksköterskan behöver känna till lika mycket om sin patient som dennes specifika funktionsnedsättning efter stroke. Vidare forskning krävs för att ge en djupare bild i dessa skillnader mellan patienternas subjektiva inställning till återhämtning från funktionsnedsättning efter stroke. / Background: Stroke has such a high prevalence in Sweden that it is classified as a national disease. The consequences can involve cognitive and physical disabilities with a need for life changing adaption of those affected. The nurse can encounter patients affected by a stroke at many various health care facilities and an increased understanding of patient’s experiences can improve the possibility of holistic nursing care. Aim: To describe how patients experience disability following a stroke. Method: A literature review based on 10 scientific articles with qualitative study design. The articles were analysed with content analysis. Result: Three themes and six categories are included in the result. Themes include: Limited autonomy, Challenges in rehabilitation and A need to be able to handle the disability. Limited autonomy distinguished itself both as the physical restriction but also as the basis for impaired mental feeling. Rehabilitation challenges were fraught with both belief in the future and unrealistic expectations, which made many vulnerable to adversity. The need to be able to handle their disability was characteristic for all patients, some needed more support from the surroundings and others relied more on their own strengths. Conclusion: The experiences of disability for the group of patients who suffered a stroke was initially dependent on the degree it had affected their autonomy. Secondary to that, there were variations in the patients perceived strengths, social and environmental factors and the will to rehabilitate. The inexperienced nurse needs to know as much about his or her patient as it need to have knowledge about the patient’s specific disability post-stroke. Further research is required to give a more in depth in the differences between the patient’s subjective attitudes and disposition in the recovery from disability post-stroke.
