The University, which is in principle a place of freedom and autonomy to teach, research and
exercise critical thinking, has an urgent need for understanding its possibilities of intervention
in socio-historical transition of society. The main issue that raises from this research is that of
the barbarism in its origin, its meaning and its manifestations yesterday and today, more
specifically in matters related to higher education and its relationship to the research subject,
the university professor. This paper initially considers the role of the University, its origin,
structure and importance. It reflects on the figure of the professor in regard to their training,
having as background the relevance of the curriculum for the seek of autonomy this initial
movement, this research reflects on some current events in the world, presenting an overview
of the practices and challenges faced by society, relating them to the concept of barbarism, its
causes and consequences. Finally we present the results of field research, qualitative study,
conducted in a private higher education institution in the city of São Paulo. Bibliographical
research was undertaken with content analysis on data collected through questionnaires and
semi-structured interviews. The final considerations seek to reflect on the theoretical and
empirical notes collected during the research and propose possible pathways for
the development of the autonomy of the university professor. The supporting authors of this
research are primarily Theodor Adorno and Paulo Freire, and secondarily, Michael Apple,
Henry Giroux, Zygmunt Bauman and John Dewey, among others / O mundo globalizado e altamente competitivo em que vivemos requer a cada dia
profissionais mais bem preparados. A Universidade, que em princípio é o lugar de liberdade e
autonomia para ensinar, pesquisar e exercer o pensamento crítico, tem a urgente necessidade
de compreender suas possibilidades de intervenção na transição sócio-histórica da sociedade.
A principal questão que emerge nesta pesquisa é a da barbárie, em sua origem, seu significado
e suas manifestações ontem e hoje, mais especificamente nas questões referentes ao ensino
superior e suas relações com o sujeito da pesquisa, o professor universitário.Este trabalho
considera inicialmente o papel da universidade, sua origem, estrutura e importância. Reflete
sobre a figura do professor universitário no que se refere à sua formação, tendo como fundo a
relevância do Currículo para a formação da autonomia na Universidade. Após esse
movimento inicial, reflete sobre alguns acontecimentos do mundo atual, apresentando um
panorama das práticas e dos desafios enfrentados pela sociedade, relacionando-os ao conceito
de barbárie, em suas origens, seus significados, suas causas e consequências. Por fimsão
apresentados os resultados da pesquisa de campo, de abordagem qualitativa, realizada numa
instituição de ensino superior privada na cidade de São Paulo. Foi empregada a pesquisa
bibliográfica com análise de conteúdo sobre os dados colhidos mediante questionários e
entrevistas semi-estruturadas. As considerações finais procuram refletir sobre os
apontamentos teóricos e empíricos levantados durante a pesquisa e propõem possíveis
caminhos para a formação da autonomia do professor universitário. Os principais autores de
sustentação desta pesquisa são Theodor Adorno e Paulo Freire, e secundariamente, Michael
Apple, Henry Giroux, ZygmuntBauman e John Dewey, entre outros
