Louis Slobodkin: Contemporary author-illustrator of children's books

"To encourage children to read with pleasure one approach may be to include works of humor among the selections. This requires a knowledge, on the part of the selector, of children's authors who are outstanding in presenting humor on a child's level of understanding. In this field one of the most successful is Louis Slobodkin, who has both written and illustrated children's books. Consideration of these works is the purpose of this paper, which presents the life of Slobodkin with emphasis on his development as an illustrator: reviews and summarizes the critic's opinion of the seventeen books that he has contributed to children's literature, and gives a bibliography of his works"--Introduction. / Typescript. / "August, 1957." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science." / Advisor: Ruth H.
