This thesis explores the relationship between the social history and the filmic history of the swimming pool. The history of the swimming pool and the history of the movies wove themselves together during the first half of the twentieth century. By 1950, the image of the swimming pool and the image of the movie star were connected in the social imaginary. Discourses about gender, health, discipline and the body were moulded by the architectural environment of the swimming pool, when the movies translated the image of the swimming pool, they carried these ideas along with them. These ideas affected the formation of modern subjectivities. This thesis attempts to demonstrate one of the means by which a particular set of ideas infiltrated the collective psyche / Cette thèse examine le rapport entre l'histoire sociale et l'histoire filmique de la piscine.
