Previous issue date: 2011 / Resumo: A globalização trouxe novos desafios para os estudos sobre as cidades. As transformações dos centros urbanos e tudo o que ocorre nas cidades rebatem diretamente sobre o modo de vida das pessoas. O estudo das praças é importante para identificar como se desenvolve a dinâmica econômica, política e social nas cidades, as relações de uso e conflito dos espaços públicos e também sua expressão como importante símbolo no contexto urbano. O objetivo geral da pesquisa foi analisar os usos das praças do centro de Ilhéus, pensando esses espaços da cidade a partir de políticas públicas que possam contemplar socialmente as coletividades. Esse estudo sobre o espaço urbano apoiou-se em leituras críticas da realidade, com base no método e nas teorias sobre o espaço difundidas pelo geógrafo Milton Santos. Ilhéus é uma cidade litorânea do sul da Bahia e nas três últimas décadas vive sob os efeitos da crise na produção do cacau, responsável por provocar mudanças significativas na vida urbana. As praças desse estudo foram agrupadas segundo sua importância política e social, verificando os "fixos e fluxos" e os elementos que as compõem. Os procedimentos metodológicos foram realizados através da observação e visitas às praças, análise e interpretação de fotografias antigas e atuais, recortes de jornais e textos adquiridos no acervo público da cidade e da Universidade Estadual de Santa Cruz, questionários aplicados com o público frequentador das praças e entrevistas com secretários da prefeitura. Além de bibliografias pertinentes a discussão teórica, foram utilizados relatos e informações históricas sobre as praças urbanas de Ilhéus. Após a análise e tratamento dos dados, foram selecionados quadros, tabelas e figuras e, posteriormente, inseridos na construção textual, ao longo dos três capítulos em que o trabalho foi estruturado. Os múltiplos usos das praças mostram que nelas as relações sociais se recrudesceram pelas divergências de opiniões. A gestão municipal tem o papel de mediar estes conflitos e apresentar soluções que contemplem a maioria dessas comunidades / Abstract: Globalization has brought news challenges for the urban studies. The changes of urban center and everything that happens around the cities are directly related to people's style of life. The study of public squares is important to identify the development of cities' economical, political and social dynamics, the relations of uses and conflicts of public squares. And also as an expression of important sign in the urban context. The principal objective of this research was to identify the uses of public squares of Ilheus city's center, thinking those spaces for public politics capable to include socially the communities. This urban study had this base from a critical lecture of reality founded in Milton Santos with theoretical and methodical spatial approaches. Ilheus is a coast city in the southern of Bahia, and have been during the last three decades surviving under the crises of cocoa's production, responsible for deep changes in urban ways of life. The public squares in this research was grouped according their social and political importance, verifying existing fluxes and fixes and their different elements. The methodological steps of this research were realized through observation and visits to public squares, also through analysis and interpretation of new and old pictures, newspaper's and texts founded in public's data from city and Santa Cruz University. Also some surveys were applied with people that frequent those public squares , and interviews were realized with the local council as well. Besides the main bibliography and theoretical debates were used narratives and historical information about the center's urban of Ilheus. After the data's analyze and interpretation figures, tableaux were selected and textually included along the three chapters that structured this work. The multiple uses from the public squares shows that in there, the social relationships where recrudesced from people with different opinions. The municipal management has the roll to mediate these conflicts and to present solutions that contemplates a majority of communities / Mestrado / Análise Ambiental e Dinâmica Territorial / Mestre em Geografia
