The objective of this research was to evaluate phosphorus doses in two melon cultivars, ‘Olimpic express’ - cantaloupe group, and ‘Iracema’ - yellow group, and quantify the plants growth and nutrients accumulation. In the first research, which consisted of two independent experiments for each cultivar, the experimental design was randomized complete blocks with six treatments (0, 50, 100, 200, 300 and 400 kg ha-1 P2O5) and five replications. P level in the plant leaves, the number and yield of commercial fruits, P level in the soil (as determined by the methods of anionic exchange resin (RTA) and Mehlich-1) were significantly affected by P doses for both cultivars. The maximum number of commercial fruits (NFC) (18,230 fruits ha-1) and the commercial productivity (PC) (28.9 t ha-1) of the ‘Olimpic express’ variety were achieved when P2O5 doses were, respectively, of 319.5 and 310 kg ha-1. On the other hand, NFC and PC (20,361 fruits ha-1 and 35.5 t ha-1, respectively) of the ‘Iracema’ cultivar were reached when P2O5 dose was of 400 kg ha-1. The optimum economic dose (DOE) for the ‘Olimpic express’ melon was of 306 kg ha-1 of P2O5, that is, very close to the dose that permitted the highest NFC and PC. For the ‘Iracema’ cultivar, it was not possible to find the DOE since PC showed to adjust itself to a linear equation so that the maximum PC was not reached. P levels in the soil and in the leaves of the ‘Olimpic express’ cultivar corresponding to the maximum PC were of 50 mg dm-3 (RTA), 45 mg dm-3 (Mehlich-1), and 3.2 g kg-1 and for the ‘Iracema’ variety of 46 mg dm-3 (RTA), 51 mg dm-3 (Mehlich-1), and 3.2 g kg-1. The second research was done in randomized complete blocks with seven treatments (sampling moments for each cultivar) and three... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)
