Quatre romans relevant du genre gothique (Le Château d'Otrante et Le Moine), ou communément rattachés au courant fantastique (Le Diable Amoureux et le Manuscrit trouvé à Saragosse), permettent de comprendre les mises en scène du surnaturel dans les dernières années du XVIII' siècle et au début du XIX' siècle. Ce surnaturel se manifeste dans des espaces spécifiques, à travers des rituels magiques de formes très différentes, mais qui renvoient tous à une action diabolique. Il revêt de plus des apparences séduisantes pour satisfaire les désirs secrets des personnages, qu'il manipule à son gré et qu'il risque de conduire à leur perte. (Il y réussit parfois). / Four novels of the gothic genre (The Castle of Otrante and the Monk)- or commonly considered of the fantastic literary movement (The Devil in Love and The Manuscript found in Saragossa) allow a better understanding of the staging of the supernatural in the last years of the the eighteenth century and early nineteenth century. This supernatural is manifested in specific spaces, through magical rituals of very different forms, which all refer to a diabolical action. It also adopts seductive appearances to satisfy the secret desires of the characters, that it manipulates at will and risks leading to their loss, even succeeding at times.
