The aim of this study is to deepen the understanding on how social media is used by youngsters and affects social networking. Qualitative interviews with ten students at Linnaeus University is conducted to understand the usages of social media applications based on their perceived functions. We have also studied the change of usage over time on the most popular applications. Furthermore, we used these perceived functions and usage to analyze how these applications affect youngsters' social networks. Finally this study shows that the use of different social media applications affect different social networks for the individual. Another finding of this study was that these functions change over time, based on developments of new social media applications.
