ABSTRACT Background Delirium is a serious and underdiagnosed condition which is common in the ICU. Several studies have shown lack of knowledge in specialist nurses when it comes to prevent, identify and manage delirium which causes unnecessary suffering. Aim To investigate knowledge about delirium in nurses specialized in intensive care at a university hospital to identify need for further education. Method A prospective cross-sectional study with quantitative approach. A web-based survey was distributed to all clinically active specialist nurses in four adult ICU:s at a university hospital (n=124). There were 64 participants who answered the survey of which 34 participants had received further education in delirium and 30 participants had not. Results There was a difference in knowledge between those who had received additional education and those who had not. All participants as a group (n=64) showed results over 70 % in all sections except for those related to screening tools, yet 64 % (n=41) reported feeling comfortable using screening tools. The majority (94 %, n=60) of the participants wanted more education in one, several or all sections regarding delirium. Conclusion The importance of identifying potential knowledge gaps among specialist nurses lies in the ability to implement appropriate measures, given the extensive consequences of delirium at both individual and societal levels. The fact that the majority expressed a desire for further education may indicate a need, which cloud lead to earlier identification of delirium by specialist nurses and subsequent application of appropriate nursing interventions.
