________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / Cleft lip and palate are among the most common craniofacial malformations. In Brazil, 1 case of cleft lip and palate occurs in every 650 births. Children who have these malformations require the coordinated attention of providers of different health fields and several surgical procedures and complex and long term treatments are necessary. The purposes of the present retrospective study was to describe and classify the patients followed in the Center for Rehabilitation of Cleft Lip and Palate (CERFIS), Goiânia - Goiás, during the years of 1998 to 2004 as well as to determine the frequency of the dental anomalies of those patients under orthodontic treatment. In this study, 1257 records of cleft lip and palate patients were evaluated, 168 records of those under orthodontic treatment. The frequency of cleft lip and palate was 43, 0 % and boys were most often affected. The cleft palate was more frequently seen in women. Most of the patients were born in the state of Goiás, and had low family income with no education degree. Orthodontic treatment was performed in children over the age of 12 years, 75,6% of cleft patients had dental anomalies inside the cleft region. Dental agenesis was the most frequent anomaly found 61,2%, the cleft lip and palate were the most prevalent in this group. The teeth most frequently absent were the upper lateral incisors and second premolars. Other common anomalies found were ectopic teeth, microdontia and supernumerary teeth.
