Egenvård vid diabetes typ 1 : En litteraturöversikt ur ungdomars perspektiv / Self-care in diabetes type 1 : A litteratur from adolecents perspective

Background: Adolescents living with diabetes must constantly adapt their lives to the disease. To achieve good health, compliance with self-care measures is of great importance. Adolescents go through various physical, mental and social changes, which periodically can affect self-care negatively and thus health. Aim: The aim was to investigate adolescent’s experiences of self-care in type 1 diabetes. Method: This study is a qualitative literature review. The ten articles included in the study were found in two databases; CINAHL and Pubmed. Thematic analysis was applied to analyze data. Results: The result presented twomain themes with associated subthemes. Promoting self-care factors with sub-themes; supportfrom family and friends, support from healthcare professionals, importance of increased knowledge and motivation as a success factor. Barriers in self-care with subthemes; challenges with parents and friends, challenges with healthcare professionals and difficultiesin everyday life. Conclusion: Adolescents with diabetes type 1 must carry out various selfcare measures every day to maintain good health. These self-care measures require strict routines and to take responsibility for their own health. It emerged that the adolescents learned this over time through their own experiences. For better management in everyday life the support from family, friends and healthcare professionals are of great importance.
