Previous issue date: 2007-10-19 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / Comprehend how the public education hás been developed in the city of São José dos Campos during the two first decades of the 20 th century has been our main objective. This period is very rich, making it possible to understand how schools began to multiply and establish a public system, similar to the one we have today. We situated São José dos Campos in the Empire-Republic transition, having as background the Politics of Public Hygiene, security, health and particularly the Education one with, when articulated, legitimated the speech in favor of cities `modernity. On behalf of Order and Progress, came the necessity to educate the former-slave, the immigrant, the people, to nationalize the country. In this manner, the way how the local press, the legislation and the memorialists made a speeches about Education, allowed us to recover what these social segments understood by Education. In this way, the schools, practically inexistent during the Empire, began to multiply with the Republic and places destined to education finally were consolidated. To search through the sources, the social sectors that constituted the social classes and to show off, conflicts of interests, the profile of who managed and frequented such places and the profile of who appropriated them were some of the questionings that we pursued with the intention to elucidate the social organization and the complexity of analysis categories of public and private. In attempt to deeply understand these politic, social and economic structures and identifying the conflicts between different groups, without missing the matching point between them, that is, the created and pursued necessity to search capability, we studied the school, its instruments, programs, customs, that is, the school s quotidian that made emerge an ideology behind those scholar experience / Compreender como se processou a Educação Pública no município de São José dos Campos durante as duas primeiras décadas do século XX, constituiu nosso objetivo principal. O período é bastante rico e por isso nos possibilita entender como as escolas começaram a se multiplicar e a configurarem uma rede pública, parecida com a que temos hoje. Contextualizamos São José dos Campos na transição Império-República, tendo como pano de fundo as Políticas Públicas de Higiene, Segurança, Saúde e particularmente da Educação que, articuladas, legitimaram o discurso em prol da modernidade das cidades. Em nome da Ordem e do Progresso, houve a necessidade de educar o ex-escravo, o imigrante, o povo, para nacionalizar o país. Desse modo, a maneira como a imprensa local, a legislação e os memorialistas discursam sobre a Educação, permitiu-nos recuperar o que esses segmentos sociais concebiam por Educação. Nesse sentido, as escolas, praticamente inexistentes no Império, passam, com a República, a se multiplicar e os espaços destinados à educação finalmente se consagram. Buscar através das fontes, os setores sociais que compunham as camadas sociais e trazer à tona, conflitos de interesses, o perfil de quem administrava e freqüentava tais espaços e de quem se apropriava deles foram alguns dos questionamentos que perseguimos no intuito de elucidar a tessitura social e a complexidade das categorias de análise do público e do privado. Na tentativa de dissecar essas estruturas políticas, sociais, econômicas e identificando os conflitos entre diferentes grupos, sem perder de vista o ponto de intersecção entre eles, ou seja, a necessidade criada e perseguida de buscar formação, buscamos nos debruçar sobre o espaço escolar, seus instrumentos, programas, ritos, enfim, o cotidiano escolar dando luz à ideologia que permeava essas experiências escolares
