Previous issue date: 2016-08-25 / The micro and small businesses play an important social economical role in the world and, specially, in developing countries such as Brazil. Due to the capability of generating employment and income, for the population, and revenue, for the State, it is increasingly important the creation of public policies which has the objective the emergence of environments that protects and develops those ventures. The business incubator is one of these environments that dedicate to nourish the business activities in the sense of providing the creation and development of more capable businesses of surviving the challenges imposed by the market. However, Will the process of incubation guarantee the success of the venture? What will be the factors that affect the failure of companies that had the experience of incubation? Seeking a better understanding of the process of incubation, its characteristics and its potential of protection and strengthening of micro and small businesses is what this present research was realized. For this purpose, it presents as the primary objective discover which factors, in the perspective of businesspeople, conditioned the failure of start-ups which were incubated on the CIEMSUL incubator, in the period from 2000 to 2015 / As micro e pequenas empresas desempenham importante papel sócio econômico no mundo e, especialmente, em países em desenvolvimento como o Brasil. Por conta da capacidade de geração de emprego e renda, para a população, e receita, para o Estado, é cada vez mais importante à criação de políticas públicas que objetivem o surgimento de ambientes que protejam e desenvolvam estes empreendimentos. A incubadora de empresas é um desses ambientes que se destina a fomentar a atividade empreendedora empresarial no sentido de propiciar a criação e o desenvolvimento de empresas com maior capacidade de sobreviver às dificuldades impostas pelo mercado. Contudo, será que passar pelo processo de incubação garante o sucesso do empreendimento? Quais serão os fatores que influenciam na mortalidade das empresas que experimentaram a incubação? Visando melhor compreender o processo de incubação, suas características e seu potencial de proteção e fortalecimento das micro e pequenas empresas é que a presente pesquisa foi desenvolvida. Para tanto, ela apresenta como principal objetivo descobrir quais fatores, na perspectiva dos empresários, condicionaram a mortalidade das empresas que estiveram incubadas na incubadora CIEMSUL, no período 2000-2015.
