The aim of this study was to analyze a speech by the president of the United States, Barack Obama, on the economic situation of the country, and to find out how ideology is visible in his speech. The theoretical framework of political discourse analysis and ideology relies mostly on Van Dijk’s earlier research, as well as Matic’s previous research. The contents of the speech are analyzed in reference to Sawhill’s research on economic mobility in the USA. Obama has different roles as he is giving the speech, and these roles all affect the way Obama talks and the kind of suggestions that he makes in order to improve economic mobility and income inequality. In addition to being the president, Obama is also a democrat and an American. Obama’s roles as president, democrat and American are clearly seen in the speech. Obama is part of different groups, to which he refers by the pronoun “we”. Ideological polarization between democrats and republicans can also be seen in the speech by Obama’s word choices, open challenging of the republicans and the suggestions that he makes regarding economic mobility. In accordance with the democratic ideology, Obama emphasizes the importance of making education available to lower social classes, too, as education is seen as the decisive factor for economic mobility by the democrats. Even though Obama is foremost seen as the president and he represents all American people, this study suggests that his democratic ideology can still be seen in the speech. This thesis provides new information to the study of presidential speeches as well as political discourse analysis and ideology in general. / Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on analysoida Yhdysvaltojen presidentin, Barack Obaman, puhetta maan taloudellisesta tilanteesta, ja selvittää, miten ideologia näkyy puheessa. Teoreettinen viitekehys, joka käsittää poliittisen diskurssianalyysin ja ideologian, muodostuu enimmäkseen Van Dijkin aikaisemmasta tutkimuksesta, kuin myös Maticin aikaisemmasta tutkimuksesta. Puheen sisältöä analysoidaan Sawhillin tutkimuksen perusteella ekonomisesta liikkuvuudesta Yhdysvalloissa. Obamalla on eri rooleja puhetta pitäessään, ja kaikki nämä roolit vaikuttavat Obaman puhetapaan, ja siihen, millaisia ehdotuksia hän tekee parantaakseen ekonomista liikkuvuutta ja tuloepätasa-arvoa. Sen lisäksi, että Obama on presidentti, hän on myös demokraatti ja amerikkalainen. Obaman roolit presidenttinä, demokraattina ja amerikkalaisena näkyvät selvästi puheessa. Obama on osa eri ryhmiä, joihin hän viittaa pronominilla ”me”. Ideologinen vastakkainasettelu demokraattien ja republikaanien välillä näkyy myös puheen sanavalinnoissa, republikaanien avoimessa haastamisessa sekä ehdotuksissa ekonomisen liikkuvuuden parantamiseksi. Demokraattisen ideologian mukaisesti Obama painottaa koulutuksen mahdollistamisen tärkeyttä alemmille sosiaaliluokille, sillä demokraattien mukaan koulutus on määräävä tekijä ekonomiselle liikkuvuudelle. Vaikka Obama enimmäkseen nähdään presidenttinä, ja hän edustaa kaikkia amerikkalaisia, tämän tutkimuksen mukaan hänen demokraattinen ideologiansa on kuitenkin nähtävissä puheessa. Tämä tutkimus tuo uutta tietoa presidenttien puheiden sekä poliittisen diskurssianalyysin ja ideologian tutkimukseen yleisesti.
