Orientador: Margarida Maria de Carvalho / Banca: Pedro Paulo Abreu Funari / Banca: Julio Cesar Magalhaes de Oliveira / Resumo: A presente pesquisa visa demonstrar, através da correspondência epistolar do bispo Cirilo de Alexandria, as implicações político-religiosas e administrativas que circundaram o conflito, ocorrido no Império Romano do Oriente, na primeira metade do século V d.C. e que ficou conhecido pela historiografia por Controvérsia Nestoriana. À primeira leitura daqueles documentos, somos direcionados a entender o referido conflito apenas na perspectiva de uma querela teológica entre Cirilo e Nestório, bispo de Constantinopla, que divergiam acerca das naturezas, divina e humana, do Cristo encarnado. O estudo das características que o gênero epistolar assumiu na Antiguidade Tardia e o mapeamento das cartas permitiu-nos traçar as redes de sociabilidade de Cirilo, nas quais detectamos esse bispo negociando interesses político-religiosos com diversos membros da hierarquia eclesiástica ortodoxa, tanto do Oriente quanto do Ocidente, e com funcionários da administração imperial. A análise do contexto em que tais discursos foram produzidos e a utilização das cartas como subsídio, levanos a observar que, embora as divergências entre Cirilo e Nestório estejam representadas naqueles documentos na forma de uma querela teológica, trata-se, contudo, de um conflito político-religioso-administrativo, cujos componentes devem ser analisados em conjunto, uma vez que, para o período em questão, não podemos separar a religião das demais esferas da vida social. Contribuíram, também, para esse viés de análise as evidências de que a hierarquia eclesiástica ortodoxa buscava espelhar a sua organização na estrutura administrativa imperial e que as formulações teológicas acerca da natureza da divindade serviam como ideologia de sustentação do poder imperial, já que, nesse período, a dinastia teodosiana governava ambas as porções do império: a oriental e a ocidental / Abstract: This study aims to show, by examining the epistolary correspondence of Bishop Cyril of Alexandria, the political, religious and administrative implications that encompassed the conflict that was occurring in the Eastern Roman Empire during the first half of the fifth century AD, and that was known in the historiography as the Nestorian Controversy. After a first reading of these documents, we're driven to understand this conflict only from the perspective of a theological dispute between Cyril and Nestorius, the bishop of Constantinople, who diverged on the nature, divine or human, of the incarnate Christ. The study of the characteristics adopted by the epistolary genus in Late Antiquity and the investigation of the letters, allowed us to trace Cyril's social networks, in which we detected this same bishop negotiating political and religious interests with several members of the Orthodox Church hierarchy, both in the East and West, and with officials of the Imperial administration. The analysis of the context in which these discourses were produced, and the use of the letters as a source, leads us to note that although the differences between Cyril and Nestorius in those documents are represented in the form of a theological quarrel, it is nevertheless a conflicting political, religious and administrative issue, in which the parts must be analyzed as a whole, since, for the period in question, we can not separate religion from other spheres of social life. Also what contributed to the tendentiousness of this analysis, was the evidence that the Orthodox Church hierarchy sought to mirror its organization in the Imperial administrative structure, and that its theological formulations about the nature of divinity served as an ideology to sustain Imperial power, since, during this period, the Theodosian dynasty ruled both parts of the empire: the East and the West / Mestre
