Este estudo parte da problemática concernente ao lugar ocupado por Paulo Freire nos referenciais teóricos de professores de educação básica de escolas públicas brasileiras. Por isso a questão norteadora do trabalho foi definida pela seguinte pergunta: o que professores da atualidade sabem sobre a teoria e a prática de Paulo Freire? Por considerar de suma importância a obra de Paulo Freire nos processos formativos docentes, sobretudo para a construção da identidade profissional e para a formação de professores progressistas em favor da construção de uma escola democrática, o objetivo geral consistiu em identificar e analisar, no contexto atual, o que professores sabem sobre Paulo Freire, tendo a formação docente como importante espaço de (re)conhecimento sobre o autor. Participaram da pesquisa vinte professores de escolas da cidade de São José do Rio Preto - SP, vinculados a dois sistemas de ensino - municipal (SMESJRP) e estadual (SEE/SP). It was held as part of the activities of the PhD course along the PostGraduation Program in Education at Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) - Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia (FCT) (Science and Technology College) (CTC), on campus Presidente Prudente - SP campus. This study starts off from the problematic concerning to the place occupied by Paulo Freire in theoretical references of the Elementary School teachers from Brazilian public schools. That's why the guiding question of this paper was defined by the following question: What do current teachers know about Paulo Freire's theory and practice? Considering the importance of Paulo Freire's work in teacher training processes, especially for the construction of professional identity and the formation of progressive teachers in favor of having a democratic school, the general goal was to identify and analyze, in the current context, what teachers know about Paulo Freire, taking into account teacher's training as an important space for (re-) knowledge about the author. Twenty teachers from schools in the city of São José do Rio Preto - SP, together with two teaching systems - a town (SMESJRP) and a state teaching (SEE / SP) took part in the study.
