Destinado prioritariamente às classes sociais economicamente privilegiadas, verifica-se que essa modalidade de ensino começou a se expandir de forma tímida a partir da Era Vargas. Com a redemocratização do país, intensificou-se o ritmo de expansão na criação de ginásios oficiais para atender a uma demanda social crescente que via na escola secundária um meio de ascensão socioeconômica. No Estado de São Paulo, a expansão da rede de estabelecimentos secundaristas se deu em dois momentos: o primeiro, a partir da década de 1930, onde o Estado, chefiado pelos Interventores Federais, contou com a contrapartida dos Municípios para a criação dos seus ginásios oficiais; o segundo, a partir do fim da Era Vargas, com o restabelecimento do Poder Legislativo e, por conseguinte, da ação dos deputados estaduais, que viam na escola secundária uma grande oportunidade política. Partindo desse aspecto importante, porém pouco investigado na historiografia da educação paulista, procuramos nesta reflexão analisar como se estabeleceram as relações entre o poder público municipal e o estadual na difusão da educação secundária. O estudo incide, portanto, no exame da criação (datada de 31 de dezembro de 1940), e nas mudanças institucionais do primeiro Ginásio Estadual da cidade de Matão, atualmente denominado Escola Estadual Professor Henrique Morato, permitindo-nos compreender o jogo político implicado entre os anos de 1940 e 1965. Adotamos, para uma melhor compreensão deste objeto de estudo, o arcabouço teórico da História Política e História Cultural, utilizando-se da história das instituições escolares e da história local, além dos trabalhos de Roger Chartier sobre o conceito de representação, norteando a análise documental / Abstract: The secondary education has undergone several transformations over the twentieth century. Aimed primarily at those economically privileged social classes, it appears that this type of education began to expand so deficient from Vargas' era. With the democratization of the country, as a means of socioeconomic rise, official secondary schools were created and stepped up the pace of expansion to meet the growing social demand. In the State of São Paulo the expansion of the network in secondary schools took place in two moments: the first one, from the decade of 30, when the Federal Government, headed by Federal Interventionists, featured the return of municipalities for the creation of their official secondary schools. The second, from the end of Vargas' era, with the restoration of the State Legislature and therefore the action of the State Legislators, who saw a great political opportunity in the secondary school. Based on this important aspect, however, with little investigation to the historiography of State of São Paulo education, we analyze how this reflection settled the relations between the State and municipal public power in the diffusion of secondary education. The study focuses, therefore, on the examination of creation (dated of December 31st, 1940), as well as institutional changes of the first secondary school in the city of Matão, currently named Escola Estadual Professor Henrique Morato, who could help us to understand the implied political game between the years 1940 and 1965.
