Previous issue date: 2016-08-23 / Funda??o de Amparo ? Pesquisa do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul - FAPERGS / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior - CAPES / The concept of entrepreneurial orientation, associated with the notion of a firm?s strategic posture towards entrepreneurship, has become a construct focus of theoretical and empirical interest in several studies in the area of strategic management. One of the best-researched topics in this literature involves the understanding of the performance consequences of entrepreneurial orientation. Despite the prominence of the subject among academics and practitioners, the evidence on the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and firm performance are inconsistent and conflicting. Prior work, such as Rauch et al. (2009), tried to examine and consolidate this considerable volume of research, exploring the cumulative knowledge on the entrepreneurial orientation-business performance relationship. However, notwithstanding these attempts, the results observed up to this moment continue inconclusive, without a consensus on the performance implications of entrepreneurial orientation. In this sense, the present thesis aimed to analyze, through a quantitative, meta-analytic review, the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and organizational performance, evaluating potential mediators and moderators. Therefore, it was sought not only to summarize empirical findings to produce more definitive evidence, but also to update and extend previous research efforts, investigating the sources of inconsistencies in the results. Using Pearson correlations as effect size statistics, and based on 80 independent samples from 78 studies, with a total sample size of 19,514 participants, it was supported the hypothesis that the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and organizational performance is direct and positive. After that, using multivariate analyses with structural equations modeling were sustained the partial mediations of learning orientation and innovativeness in the linkage between entrepreneurial orientation and firm performance. In addition, employing a multiple regression model, it was found that the entrepreneurial orientation-performance relationship is stronger for multi-item measures of performance than for single-item measures, and that the effect of entrepreneurial orientation on revenue-based performance measures is stronger when compared to the effect on cost-based measures. Drawing on these findings, academic and managerial implications were discussed, as well as limitations and recommendations for future research.
