Previous issue date: 2013-03-20 / Eugenics, since its development as a scientific theory by Englishman Francis Galton, was widely circulated by several countries during the first half of the twentieth century. Arising from a period of intense discussion on heredity, environmental influences and degeneration, took different frames in the composition of their proposals. We seek to analyze the diffusion of those ideas in Rio Grande do Sul, in order to understand how the eugenic speech was appropriated by the physicians as a way to provide not only the specificity of their professional field in the State, but also its role in the interpretation of Brazilian reality and predictions for the future. / A eugenia, desde seu desenvolvimento como teoria cient?fica pelo ingl?s Francis Galton, teve grande difus?o por diversos pa?ses durante a primeira metade do s?culo XX. Advinda de um per?odo de intensa discuss?o sobre hereditariedade, influ?ncia do meio ambiente e degenera??o, assumiu diferentes referenciais na composi??o de suas propostas. Buscamos analisar a difus?o dessas ideias no Rio Grande do Sul, a fim de perceber como o discurso eug?nico foi apropriado pelos m?dicos rio-grandenses como forma de constituir n?o s? a especificidade de seu campo profissional no Estado, mas tamb?m o seu papel na interpreta??o da realidade brasileira e nos progn?sticos para o futuro.
