This thesis-work is included in the subject of product development – construction. The project is on C level and includes 15 credits. The work is carried out at the Mälardalens University in Sweden. The goal of the project is to determine how a change from a four-wheeled to a three-wheeled configuration impacts a vehicle. The subject vehicle is a so called ”Locost” which is a term used for homebuilt cars based on Lotus 7. The result of this work is meant to make the basis for future development of a three-wheeled Locost. The project begins by collecting information about the vehicle that are needed for the comparisons between the four- and the three-wheeled vehicle that are to be carried out. With the collected information as basis the two vehicles are compared to each other. The comparisons show that the three-wheeled vehicle exhibits a greater tendency to roll over and a lower acceleration capability. Different ways to minimize the differences between the two vehicles are then explored. The project is ended with a proposal on how the suspension system of the three-wheeled vehicle can be designed in order to minimize the negative effects that the removal of one wheel has on its behavior.
