Previous issue date: 2010-02-10 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Human aging is revealed as a worldwide phenomenon with wide repercussions, and portrays a new design population which is directly influencing the social, political and economic in Brazil. Today, according to IBGE (2008), about 20 million Brazilians are elderly (10.2% of the population), and this group is continually growing and demanding more action and policies for better living conditions, and the security of their rights elementary (citizenship, equality, health, education, welfare, housing, etc.). Due to the increasing number of elderly, there is the need for further investigations, not only in the natural sciences but also in the social sciences and humanities. Thus, this research is problematic insertion of the elderly in a specific area of education, in line with what is prescribed and recommended public policies for this segment, related to the actual educational experiences in the old city of Ponta Grossa. The main objective of this research was to reflect on the aging process, showing the public policies for the elderly segment, particularly to education for the elderly. This research is qualitative, and went through three stages: the first focused on the literature review on the subject and description and interpretation of policies, the second on the field research, with questionnaires to 219 students at the Open University for Seniors (UATI), Universidade Estadual de Ponta Grossa (UEPG), which constitutes a single educational space specific to the elderly in Ponta Grossa, the third step refers to the analysis of data obtained through open and closed questions, with the dialectic as a method of analysis. It was concluded that there are public policies that guarantee access to education, methodologies, materials and teachers adequate to meet the needs of the elderly, however, few actions to ensure compliance with these rights. In the city of Ponta Grossa, there are some actions for the welfare, recreation and integration of the elderly, and stands just UATI, as a place of care for the elderly, preferably for the purpose of education. The work in UATI allows this course is referenced because of their importance, as there are updated, high self-esteem, better quality of life, greater social inclusion and citizen of the elderly. / O envelhecimento humano se desvela como um fenômeno mundial de grande repercussão e retrata um novo desenho demográfico, que está influenciando diretamente a estrutura social, política e econômica no Brasil. Hoje, segundo o IBGE (2008), cerca de 20 milhões de brasileiros são idosos (10,2% da população), e este grupo está continuamente crescendo e demandando mais ações e políticas para melhores condições de vida, além da seguridade de seus direitos elementares (cidadania, igualdade, saúde, educação, previdência, habitação, entre outros). Devido a crescente quantidade de idosos, surge a necessidade de novas investigações, não apenas nas ciências naturais, mas também nas ciências sociais e humanas. Assim, a presente pesquisa tem como problemática a inserção do idoso em um espaço educacional específico, em consonância com o que está prescrito e recomendado nas políticas públicas para este segmento, relacionado com a realidade educacional que o idoso vivencia na cidade de Ponta Grossa. O objetivo central desta investigação foi refletir sobre o processo de envelhecimento, evidenciando as políticas públicas voltadas para o segmento idoso, em especial às destinadas a educação na terceira idade. Esta pesquisa é qualitativa, e ocorreu em três etapas: a primeira voltada à revisão de literatura sobre o tema e a descrição e interpretação das políticas; a segunda, referente a pesquisa de campo, com a aplicação de questionários para 219 alunos da Universidade Aberta para a Terceira Idade (UATI), da Universidade Estadual de Ponta Grossa (UEPG), que se constitui como único espaço educacional específico para o idoso em Ponta Grossa; a terceira etapa refere-se a análise dos dados obtidos por meio de questões abertas e fechadas, tendo a dialética como método de análise. Concluiu-se que existem políticas públicas que garantem o acesso à educação, com metodologias, materiais e professores adequados para atender as necessidades do idoso, porém, ainda são poucas as ações que garantem o cumprimento destes direitos. Na cidade de Ponta Grossa, existem algumas ações voltadas para o assistencialismo, lazer e integração dos idosos, e destaca-se apenas a UATI, como um lugar de atendimento ao idoso, destinada preferencialmente ao objetivo da educação. O trabalho desenvolvido na UATI permite que este curso seja referenciado devido a sua importância, pois há atualização, elevação de auto-estima, melhoria na qualidade de vida, maior inserção social e cidadã do idoso.
