Interkulturell Historieundervisning: Möjligheter och Hinder / Intercultural History Education:Opportunities and Obstacles

As today's classroom has transformed into a multicultural classroom, it brings with it both possibilities and challenges. We have asked ourselves the questions whether the application of an intercultural perspective in history education is possible and doable, and what obstacles and opportunities may present themselves if this perspective is applied. We have studied research regarding interculturality in a classroom specific context and through a wider theoretical framework. We did this to analyze how and if it is applicable to the subject of history education in a school context. The search engines used are: “ERC”, “ERIC”, and “SWEPUB”.     Our paper concludes that interculturality can be applied in history education without compromising eithers core ideas. Through the use of teacher discussion groups, together with introspection from the teachers’ regarding their own practice, we have found the implementation to be possible. Another aspect is that the use of historical empathy in exercises has an effect on students’ ability to construct the necessary perspective shifts needed to acquire an intercultural ability in history education. Further, we discovered that students and teachers share the view that interculturality needs to be implemented in school. However, we also note that some research regarding teachers' views are split between some deeming it to be unnecessary. Lastly, we have found that harnessing student’s emotional responses to historical issues can have positive results in regard to their acquisition of different perspectives. These perspectives lay the groundwork for the historical empathy that helps them acquire intercultural competence.      The main obstacles for applying an intercultural perspective in history education is suggested by our research to be mainly a lack of resources, time, and supporting structures.
