Compañeros de viaje. Elementos intertextuales en la obra poética de juventud de Jaime Gil de Biedma

This study examines the intertextual relationships present in Gil de Biedma’s first book of poems. The objective is to gain an in-depth understanding of the intertextual relationships present in the book of poems Compañeros de viaje, offering, as far as possible, a complete overview of the authors with whom it establishes an intertextual dialogue and its specific forms of intertextuality. The purpose of such an analysis is to establish that far from being a minor aspect of the poetry of his youth, it is rather an essential element without which it cannot be fully understood, and that the three intertextual resources -citation, plagiarism and allusion- are present in these poems. Previous studies show that Gil de Biedma's poetry receives the decisive impact of English literature, in particular W.H. Auden and T.S. Eliot, of some French symbolists, in particular Baudelaire and Mallarmé, and of some Spanish poets of the generation of '27. Starting from these premises, and having previously delved into the concept of intertextuality, seven poems from the above-mentioned book of poems are analysed and discussed according to the theoretical framework provided by Gérard Genette in his work Palimpsestes. The results offered by the analysis of these poems are then presented. Finally, this study discusses whether some literary loans should be called citations or plagiarisms and questions the underlying psychological motivations of plagiarism in Gil de Biedma’s early work.
