the Role of Shi'ism and Shi'is in the Downfall of the Umawis.

Most scholars who have discussed the change from the Umawi to the 'Abbasi dynasty have focused on the socio-political and military aspects of the revolts against the Umawis. This study examines the religio-ideological dimension of these revolts as represented by Shi'ism, that provided effective motivation, for the opposition to Umawi rule. The history of the late Umawi caliphate is discussed in order to clarify the role of Shi'ism and other religio-political opposition in accelerating the collapse of the Umawi dynasty.
