The purpose with this study was to examine how counsellors at Swedish youth clinics experience their knowledge about neurodevelopmental disorders and how they describe the importance of knowledge when meeting youths. This is a qualitative study where the results are based on semi structured interviews with seven counsellors working at different youth clinics around Sweden. The empirics were analysed with a qualitative content analysis where three themes were identified: The importance of knowledge when meeting youths, View of Knowledge towards disability and Conditions for the use of knowledge. The results were analysed with the concept of knowledge and discretion, where the results shows that the counsellors have good knowledge about neurodevelopmental disorders where the practical knowledge was the most significant. Knowledge about neurodevelopmental disorders is important for the counsellors to be able to remit and refer adequately, also to adjust the meeting with the youths and in the environment. Knowledge is also important so the counsellors can understand the individual better and be able to question stereotypes and preconceptions concerning neurodevelopmental disorders. The use of knowledge is both possible and limited by the counsellor’s discretion, which is conditioned by organizational aspects and collaboration with other care- and support instances. The counsellors don’t work with any methodological- or knowledge-based support in terms of neurodevelopmental disorders and the work requires a lot of own responsibility to reflect and gain enough knowledge about neurodevelopmental disorders.
