This study is aimed at the development of long-term sustainable and more dense cities. Where different theories and strategies are discussed, which can be further developed in future projects. Density is a way to plan and design with the intention of reducing the strain on our infrastructure. Through density, proximity is created, this contributes to shorter transport distances and safer roads. Density can be described in different ways, whereas the measurement instruments often used to measure density, reflect a picture far from reality. This makes the path to density often misleading and deprioritises important qualities such as greenery and social spaces. Our project “How Density Can Be Correct” is based on creating dense and long-term sustainable cities, with a focus on our well-being. To achieve this, we need greenery, light, and social interactions which are important building blocks for promoting good health. By implementing and enabling these qualities to take place, healthier lifestyles and greener cities can be created. Through the project, two courtyards in the city of Malmö have been continuously visited and analyzed, to understand practically which solutions do and do not work. The project then began with a background theory that, among other things, increasing the practice of dense building and its benefits. The same chapter also describes the importance of greenery and social spaces. This is followed by different chapters that explain how the complex is built. Within these chapters, the shape of the blocks, courtyards, apartments, businesses, passages, and green spaces are discussed. In the conclusion, everything we have taken from our studies is presented in a design proposal that aims to show a general model of how different strategies for greenery and social interactions can be implemented. Yet, the proposal also recognises other qualities that are desirable to create an attractive city.
