At first, the aim of this research was to analyse discourses on the national linguistic
identity that appeared in the news pieces published by Folha de S.Paulo, between 2001 and
2005. The initial selection of the pieces allowed us to notice, however, that the debate about
the language was part of a much bigger context: the discussions about the legitimation of a
national identity. From that, we could formulate the central hypothesis of this research, which
is, the debates about national identity is based on the linguistic factor. In other words, the
language is the element that supports the discussions on national identity. These debates, in
turn, are developed, in Folha de S.Paulo, on two different thematic axles . In the first one,
the Portuguese language is confronted with English, and from that confrontation a severe
controversy arises regarding the foreign expressions coming from English and used in
Portuguese. The news pieces from this axle indicated to us that the discussions were not about
the legitimation of the linguistic identity, as one may assume at first, but about the national
identity itself. The second axle, on the other hand, confronted the Brazilian variety of
Portuguese language with the other worldwide varieties, and, in this scene, the polemic
viewed as a violent controversy did not take place and the Brazilian variety, and,
consequently, Brazil, was given a leadership role among the other Portuguese-speaking
countries, including Portugal, the former metropolis. To proceed the analysis of the 40
selected pieces of news of our corpus, we used the theoretical formulations of the French
school of Discourse Analysis, especially some concepts developed by Dominique
Maingueneau inside the proposition of a global semantics. / Inicialmente, o objetivo desta pesquisa era analisar os discursos acerca da
legitimação de uma identidade lingüística nacional presentes nas matérias publicadas pela
Folha de S.Paulo entre os anos de 2001 e 2005. Após uma seleção inicial de matérias,
pudemos perceber, entretanto, que o debate sobre a língua inseria-se num contexto mais
amplo, a saber, das discussões sobre a legitimação de uma identidade nacional. Partindo daí,
formulamos a hipótese central de que as discussões acerca de uma identidade nacional
supõem a questão lingüística. Em outras palavras, a língua é o elemento sobre o qual se
apóiam os debates em torno da identidade nacional. Esses debates, por sua vez, desenrolamse,
na Folha de S.Paulo, em dois eixos temáticos diferentes. No primeiro eixo, a língua
portuguesa é confrontada com o inglês, do que decorre uma controvérsia violenta a respeito
da abertura ou fechamento da língua para os estrangeirismos daí advindos. Foram as matérias
deste eixo que nos serviram de índice de que a discussão central era, não a legitimação de
uma identidade lingüística, como poderíamos supor de início, mas, sim, de uma identidade
nacional. Já no segundo eixo, o português brasileiro é posto em relação às demais variedades
da língua portuguesa, sendo que, neste cenário, a polêmica entendida como controvérsia
violenta não se instaura e ao português brasileiro, e, conseqüentemente, ao Brasil, é
atribuído um papel de liderança no bloco dos países falantes de língua portuguesa, inclusive
diante de Portugal, antiga metrópole. Para proceder à análise das 40 matérias que compõem
nosso corpus, tomamos por base os postulados teóricos da Análise de Discurso de linha
francesa, em especial alguns conceitos formulados no interior da proposta de uma semântica
global de Dominique Maingueneau (1984/2005), tais como o de interdiscurso mais
especificamente, de campo discursivo e espaço discursivo e interincompreensão. / Mestre em Linguística
