Previous international studies have shown that mathematics teaching in Sweden is in need of improvement. The results show that Swedish students possess great mathematical difficulties in algebra. The purpose of this study was to investigate how analogous mathematics books can promote students' algebra knowledge through social interaction and multimodal learning, in relation to the new curriculum, Lgr22 for grade 3. In order to be able to answer the purpose of this study, an analysis of three different teaching materials for grade 3 has been done. The results of this study show that teaching materials that pretend to include all algebra areas in relation to the curriculum, Lgr22 do not treat all areas to the same extent. The teaching materials inclusion of different elements of algebra varies a lot, which can lead to weaker knowledge for the students in certain parts of algebra. The three teaching materials that were studied turned out to touch on algebra, but some inclusion of social interaktion and multimodal aspects in certain parts varies in the different algebra areas.
