Summary: The presence of Salmonella was investigated through bacteriological exams of fresh feces from cecum in five laying hen farms over a period of 52 weeks since the arrival of the day-old birds. All flocks examined were varieties of light white-egg chickens. Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis and S. enterica rough strain were isolated from the transporting boxes of the day-old birds received by four farms. In the farm number five Salmonella was not detected in the transporting boxes and also was not detected in the feces over the 52 weeks. In the farm 01 Salmonella was isolated from the feces examined at 1st, 11th, 34th and 42nd weeks; in the farm 02 it was detected at 1st, 4th and 11th weeks; in the farm 03 Salmonella was isolated in the first week and from the 17th to 52nd week. In the farm 04 Salmonella was isolated from the feces collected in the first week only. Besides S. Enteritidis and the rough strains, S. enterica serovar Infantis, S. enterica serovar Mbandaka and S. enterica serovar Javiana were also isolated. Bacteriological exams of 500 eggs from each farm were performed, showing that 0.2% of farm 1 and 2.0% of farm 3 were contaminated by S. Enteritidis and S. Enterica rough strain.
