Previous issue date: 2001 / Resumo: O objetivo desta dissertação é descrever e analisar construções de português brasileiro que são caracterizadas por duas instâncias do mesmo verbo na mesma sentença, como mostrado abaixo: (1) Fazer, eu fiz o bolo. (2) Fazer o bolo, eu fiz (mas...) (3) Fazer bolo, eu sempre faço. Nessas construções, há, na periferia esquerda, uma instância verbal, que está na forma infinitiva e uma outra instância na posição regular dos verbos em português. A principal proposta desta dissertação é que essas construções com duas instâncias de um dado verbo sejam casos de topicalização de constituintes verbais e que esses casos devem ser classificados em três subtipos de acordo com suas propriedades sintáticas e semântico-pragmáticas. No primeiro capítulo, examino as estruturas de foco-pressuposição e tópico comentário e argumento que uma análise em termos de topicalização de constituintes verbais é a mais adequada. O segundo capítulo trata de dois efeitos semântico pragmáticos relacionados às sentenças coordenadas adversativas que podem seguir essas construções: o efeito de contrastividade e o efeito-mas. No terceiro capítulo, descrevo as propriedades sintáticas que distinguem os três tipos de topicalização de constituintes verbais. Finalmente, o quarto capítulo propõe uma explicação para a ocorrência de duas instâncias verbais, utilizando a teoria de movimento por cópia (Chomsky 1993; Nunes 1995, 1999, 2000) / Abstract: The aim of this thesis is to describe and analyze constructions in Brazilian Portuguese that are characterized by two instances of the same verb in the same sentence, as shown below: (1) Fazer, eu fiz o bolo. 'As for making, - I did the cake.' (2) Fazer o bolo, eu fiz (mas...) 'As for making the cake, I did it (but.)' (3) Fazer bolo, eu sempre faço. 'As for making cake, I make it always.' In these constructions, there is a verbal instance in the left periphery, which is in the infinitival form, and another one in normal position of verbs in Portuguese. The main proposal of this thesis is that these constructions with two instances of a given verb are cases of VP-topicalization and that they may be classified in three subtypes, according to their syntactic and semantic-pragmatic properties. In first chapter, I examine the focus-presupposition and topic-comment structures of these constructions and argue that an analysis in terms of VP-topicalization is the most adequate. The second chapter deals with two semantic-pragmatic effects, related to adversative coordinate clauses that can follow these constructions: the contrastiveness effect and the but-effect. In the third chapter, I describe the syntactic properties that distinguish the three types of VP-topicalization. Finally, the fourth chapter proposes an explanation for the occurence of the two verbal instances, using the copy theory of movement (Chomsky 1993; Nunes 1995, 1999, 2000) / Mestrado / Mestre em Linguística
