Previous issue date: 2014-03-14 / Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais / This dissertation has the main objective to investigate the established dialogue between literature and history in the work Memórias de Adriano by Marguerite Yourcenar. It refers to the II century, period that Rome was governed by emperor Adriano. Youcenar gives voice to the character in order to introduce him to the reader through a narrative that aims to reflect about the past. This new look about the historical facts brings an important way to rethink the historical writing, in addition to enable greater clarification for the frequent oppositions of meaning in the following expressions use: "fact and fiction", "reality and imagination", "truth and invention". For this study, we will support ourselves in theorists and critics that address those relations: M. de Certeau, G. Duby, C. Ginzburg, J. Le Goff, L. Hutcheon, L.C. Lima, P. Veyne, G. Gengembre, and others. After the theoretical- critical discussion, we will consider the questions connected to the literary genres. Afterwards, still aiming the relation between literature and history, we can notice that Yourcenar, after return to this distant past, he does not absent from the problems of the present. Through the acts and reports by Adriano, we can see that, as the author, he positions himself in defense of human values. The character and author's voices establish a critical dialogue about the humanity problems. Therefore, we have a dialogue between the present and the past. The present is determined by two World Wars that ruined the humanity, and it is also shown in some moments of Adriano's reflections when he does forethought for human beings future. And it is through this concernment with the liberty and the individual that we see to constitute the character identity. There is a discourse that leads us to know its conflicts and challenges. It is necessary to highlight that the narrator does not only reveal the desires, agonies, euphoria and private disappointments, but also the ones that seek for liberty, peace and the justice between the human beings. / A presente dissertação tem por objetivo principal investigar o diálogo estabelecido entre literatura e história na obra Memórias de Adriano, de Marguerite Yourcenar. Trata-se do século II, período em que Roma foi governada pelo imperador Adriano. Yourcenar dá voz ao personagem para que este se apresente ao leitor através de uma narrativa que busca refletir sobre o passado. Esse novo olhar acerca dos fatos históricos traz um viés importante para se repensar a escrita histórica, além de possibilitar maior esclarecimento quanto às frequentes oposições de sentidos no uso dos termos: fato e ficção , realidade e imaginação , verdade e invenção . Para esse estudo nos apoiaremos em teóricos e críticos que abordam tais relações: M. de Certeau, G. Duby, C. Ginzburg, J. Le Goff, L. Hutcheon, L.C. Lima, P. Veyne, G. Gengembre, dentre outros. Após a discussão teórico-crítica consideraremos as questões ligadas aos gêneros literários. Em seguida, visando ainda a relação entre literatura e história, poderemos perceber que Yourcenar, ao retornar a esse passado distante, não se ausenta dos problemas do presente. Por meio dos atos e relatos de Adriano podemos ver que este, bem como a autora, posiciona-se na defesa de valores humanos. As vozes do personagem e da autora estabelecem um diálogo crítico acerca dos problemas da humanidade. Temos, portanto, um diálogo entre o presente e o passado. O presente, marcado por duas Guerras Mundiais que assolaram a humanidade, transparece em certos momentos das reflexões de Adriano, quando este faz antecipações quanto ao futuro dos homens. E é através dessa preocupação com a liberdade e com o indivíduo que vemos se constituir a identidade do personagem. Há um discurso através do qual somos levados a conhecer seus conflitos e desafios. Faz- se necessário ressaltar que o narrador revela não somente seus desejos, suas angústias, suas euforias e suas decepções, mas de todo aquele que busca a liberdade, a paz e a justiça entre os homens.
