The increased interest in a sustainable environment puts pressure on companies in the manufacturing industry. Rexcell Tissue & Airlaid AB (Rexcell) in Skåpafors produces paper to be converted into tabletop and hygiene products. Rexcell is certified according to the environmental management system ISO 14001, gaining competitive advantages by showing that the company works toward a sustainable environment and that they follow current legislation. The activities at the company are classified as hazardous to the environment according to the Environmental code. Every year, the activities are inspected by an independent inspector. The inspection performed in 2006 established that the company is well kept and that the awareness program is extensive with some exceptions and that risk analyses should be carried out on specific areas. The company lacks a current environmental investigation. The latest environmental investigation was performed in 1998 and the environmental aspects that were found at that time need to be updated. The purpose of this thesis was to identify and elucidate environmental aspects and risk sources in the activities at Rexcell. The work was performed by mapping activities leading to pollution of the outer environment and by identifying risk sources at points chosen by the management. The environmental investigation was performed at one of the company’s three plants, Tissuebruket. The investigation includes all activities at that plant during 2006. The risk analyses were performed on certain areas at all three plants and include what can happen if chemicals or polluted process waste water reaches the outer environment. The environmental investigation was performed with a descriptive purpose since the company had fundamental insights about the environmental aspects. When it came to the risk analyses there was a lack of documented knowledge so the analyses were performed with an explorative purpose. Different kinds of methods were used for collecting data; studies of literature and documents, interviews, observations and a questionnaire survey were performed and expertise in different areas was contacted. A model given by IVF Industriforskning och utveckling AB was used as a support in the work with the environmental investigation. The Preliminary Hazard Analysis method was used when performing the risk analyses. The result of the environmental investigation shows that the list of environmental aspects needs to be revised. New environmental aspects need to be added to the list and some of the old aspects have to be updated. The performed risk analyses show that measures have to be taken at a few points but that the risks that remain are acceptable. A review of the activities showed that the company works with environmental issues, but that the management could run the issue further. The environmental issues should be communicated to the personnel in order to get employees who are aware of and involved in the work toward a sustainable development. / Uppsatsnivå: D
