Previous issue date: 2006 / During the year 1945, the street movement known as queremismo demanded the permanence of Vargas in the power, inspiring significant portions of Brazilian workers. Queremismo is a difficult question to be confronted, both in the liberal and leftist traditions: the Estado Novo is undergoing a crisis, while at the same time the prestige of Vargas grows. When the democratic regime emerges as a political alternative for the country, the workers demanded that Vargas continues in power. All the currents of opinion that became political partiers at the time were affected by queremismo to a greater or lesser extent. Although queremismo was manipulated by political groups connected with Vargas, it also forwarded the interests of the popular masses. In Rio Grande do Sul beginning as a movement to safeguard the labor laws, it subsequently demanded the organization of Constituent Assembly and ended up by channeling the working mass into a political party, the Brazilian Labor Party. On the one hand, it roused the masses from the political apathy. / Ao longo do ano de 1945, o movimento conhecido como queremismo exigiu, nas ruas, a permanência de Vargas no poder, entusiasmando parcelas significativas dos trabalhadores brasileiros. O queremismo apresenta uma questão difícil de ser enfrentada, tanto na tradição liberal quanto de esquerda: o Estado Novo entra em crise e se enfraquece, mas, no mesmo movimento, cresce o prestígio de Vargas. Quando o regime democrático surge como alternativa política para o país, os trabalhadores exigem que Vargas continue no poder. Todas as correntes de opinião que se transformaram em partidos políticos na época, foram afetadas com maior ou menor impacto pelo queremismo. Mesmo manobrado por grupos políticos ligados Vargas, o queremismo também correspondeu interesses das massas populares. No Rio Grande do Sul de movimento defensivo das leis trabalhistas, passou à exigência de uma constituinte e terminou por canalizar os trabalhadores para um partido político, o Partido Trabalhista Brasileiro. Por um lado, tirou as massas da apatia política em que se colocara e as tornou atuante politicamente.
