Abstract Introduction Healthcare systems play an important role in helping women in abusive relationships receive assistance. Routine questions about domestic violence increase the chance of detecting victims of violence. Few women tell spontaneously if they are being subjected to violence, the majority of women do not mind being asked about domestic violence. Aim The aim was to describe how patients suffering from intimate partner violence experience contact with healthcare professionals. Method A systematic literature review of studies with qualitative design. Literature search was done in the databases PubMed and CINAHL. Result The results were divided into these themes: First insight, facilitating factors, helpful actions, the role of healthcare professionals, inadequate treatment, ignorance of healthcare professionals and trust. Patients described positive feelings about talking to healthcare professionals about their situation. The women thought it was necessary for healthcare professionals to show genuine interest, empathy and knowledge about intimate partner violence. This included the importance of confidentiality, understanding the complexity of the situation and being able to offer proper help. It was important to schedule follow ups, and for the patients to get care from trusted healthcare personnel. There was less willingness to talk about intimate partner violence if the healthcare professionals encountered patients in a bad manner. Conclusion In healthcare, it is important to follow systems for dealing with women who have been exposed to intimate partner violence. Good competence in the subject and a safe environment are required. It is important that patients are treated respectfully when reporting exposure to violence.
