Este trabalho investiga a obra de Christiano de la Paix Gelbert, arquiteto que trabalhou na Prefeitura Municipal de Porto Alegre de 1925 a 1953. Contratado como desenhista, logo ascendeu à desenhista-chefe e, em 1932, foi promovido a arquiteto-chefe da Diretoria de Obras. Gelbert se manteve no comando das obras públicas municipais até 1953, quando se aposentou. Seus 28 anos de atividade coincidiram com um período de intensa atuação do poder público municipal na construção da cidade, na qual o escritório por ele comandado projetou e construiu hospitais, hidráulicas, pontes, praças, escadarias, terminais de transporte, pavilhões de exposição, estádios e outros edifícios públicos. Gelbert foi o arquiteto responsável pelo projeto do Plano Geral e dos principais pavilhões da Exposição do Centenário Farroupilha de 1935. O trabalho efetua uma revisão bibliográfica do tema, combinada com investigação original em arquivos sobre a pessoa e obra de Gelbert. Na sequência, são analisadas suas obras mais significativas, buscando identificar a sua inserção no panorama local e em contextos mais amplos da arquitetura. O registro e análise da obra do arquiteto salvaguarda uma parte significativa da história da arquitetura pública gaúcha produzida na primeira metade do século XX. / The dissertation studies the work of Christiano de la Paix Gelbert, an architect who worked in the Public Works of Porto Alegre's city government from 1925 to 1953. Hired as a draftsman, he was soon promoted to higher positions, becoming principal architect of public works in 1932. Gelbert remained in such position until his retirement. His 28 years of activity happened in a time of great public efforts in renewing the city, in which the city administration office, guided by him, designed and built hospitals, water treatment facilities, bridges, public gardens, bus and tramway stations, exhibition halls, sports stadiums and other public buildings. Gelbert was also the main designer of the Farroupilha Centennial Fair in 1935. The dissertation makes a bibliographic review of the subject, combined with original investigation in archives about the person and work of Gelbert. This is followed by an analysis of the main works of the architect, aiming at defining his role in the local context and the relation of his contribution with broader spheres in the field of architecture. The documentation and analysis of his work helps to preserve an important part of the history of the public architecture Rio Grande do Sul in the first half of the 20th century.
