Edutainment by testing regional geography with Kahoot: Pros and Cons. In this study qualities and problems relating to edutainment are investigated. Specifications: content: regional geography; form: test/competition; tool: Kahoot. Scope of data: one lesson, two schools, five classes, 87 pupils (age. 12-13), four teachers. Methods: test items, attitude items, observation, pupils’ assessments, teacher interviews. Issue 1: Edutainment or not? What attitudes by pupils are noticed concerning design, performance, and tool? Finding: Positive attitudes with few exceptions. Issue 2: Variation concerning achievement? Finding: The school dominated by Swedish pupils performed better than the multi-cultural school, but the difference was small. Variations are noticed in relation to test items (Swedish, European, and global) as well as school classes. Issue 3 Attitudes towards tested content? Finding: Pupils and teachers do accept figurative knowledge, i.e., hard facts of regional geography. Problems: Cheat noticed in one school class. A minority dislike the competitive approach. Constraints: Facts are tested but not insights. Advantages: The mix of quantitative and qualitative data. Pupils who are interested in hard facts but slow learners in relation to difficult content are compensated. Bruner’s theory of instruction is challenged. Conflicts between scholars of geography and Swedish politicians were articulated when the national curriculum was revised. Scholars claimed that geographical insights should be stressed, but the former minister of education decided to emphasize hard facts and insights equally. One appendix of this thesis addresses how geographical insights and use of Kahoot could be combined in classroom discourses.
