understanding the diverse forms of poverty alleviation - firstly, from the private initiative,
through the so called Social Businesses (SB); secondly, from the public initiative, focusing on
International Development and its relationship with Social Anthropology and with qualitative
aspects of the understanding of poverty. The first essay discusses the concept of SB,
suggesting a new approach to its definition. Through in-depth interviews with social
entrepreneurs in the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil, the research aimed at understanding issues
such as the entrepreneurs? motivations and difficulties, the tension between financial needs
and social transformation and the entrepreneurs? perspectives on SB. It was concluded, in the
analysed cases, that the revenue generation for financial sustainability is still small and the
impact is limited. It was also noted that the sector is still incipient in the city, what could
indicate a growing potential, or could lead to the possibility that SBs might just be marginal
experiences, with local relevance solely. The second essay is aimed at discussing possible
contributions that Social Anthropology may have in debates and policy design within the
International Development set. We present a brief overview of the connections between social
anthropology and development, discussing historical perspectives and possible starting points
for advancing in the discussion. We also discuss possible limitations for anthropological
contributions and the possibilities for reconciling quantitative and qualitative interpretations
of poverty and how the capture of the latter may contribute to the improvement on the efforts
towards poverty alleviation. / O presente trabalho foi pensado a partir da motiva??o de entender formas diversas de
combate ? pobreza - tanto a partir da iniciativa privada, atrav?s dos chamados Neg?cios
Sociais, quanto atrav?s da iniciativa p?blica, com foco no ?mbito do Desenvolvimento
Internacional e da rela??o desse com a antropologia social e com aspectos qualitativos de
compreens?o da pobreza. O primeiro ensaio se volta ao entendimento dos Neg?cios Sociais
(NS), empresas que buscam ser sustent?veis financeiramente, gerando lucro a partir de sua
atividade principal, ao mesmo tempo em que buscam gerar benef?cios sociais para camadas
mais pobres da popula??o. Um fluxograma ? proposto para facilitar a defini??o desses e, a
partir dos modelos identificados, uma pesquisa foi realizada com empreendedores sociais em
Porto Alegre, RS. Percebe-se, para os casos analisados, que a gera??o de receita para a
sustentabilidade financeira do neg?cio ? pequena, e o impacto causado ? limitado. Como
conclus?o, observamos que o setor ainda ? muito incipiente, o que pode indicar potencial de
crescimento e amplia??o de impacto, ou apontar para a possibilidade de que os NS talvez
sejam apenas experi?ncias marginais, com relev?ncias apenas locais. O segundo ensaio se
volta ao ?mbito da iniciativa p?blica. O objetivo foi o de entender como a Antropologia
Social pode contribuir para o Desenvolvimento Internacional. Buscou-se apresentar um breve
relato da rela??o da antropologia com o desenvolvimento, trazendo perspectivas hist?ricas e
poss?veis pontos de partida para um avan?o na discuss?o do tema. Colocam-se os limites que
se imp?em para as contribui??es da Antropologia Social e as possibilidades de avan?o na
concilia??o entre interpreta??es quantitativas e qualitativas da pobreza e como a captura da
?ltima pode contribuir para a melhoria na efic?cia no combate ? pobreza.
