In 2017, programming was introduced as a new element in Mathematics education for seven of the Upper Secondary School mathematics courses. Teachers´ reactions towards the integration were ambiguous. Even now, three years after its introduction, this lack of consensus is still prevalent. The purpose of this study is to compile research results regarding the opportunities and difficulties of integrating programming in mathematics teaching from a teacher’s perspective. Furthermore, this study identifies beneficial teaching methods to enable this integration. The teaching methods are chain learning, scaffolding, collaboration and programming by demonstration. The integration of programming in mathematics teaching using any of these methods, however, offers both opportunities and difficulties. The following opportunities were found; programming is a motivating and a creative element in the curriculum, it fosters collaboration between teachers and helps students to develop their mathematical competencies. The difficulties and obstacles found are the lack of time, the problem of adapting mathematics teaching to this new situation and of assessing students’ progress, the lack of statutory guidelines for the integration and teachers’ inadequate knowledge of programming.
