Previous issue date: 2017-11-27 / Cancer is characterize by disordered growth of cells that invade the tissues and organs, and may occur metastases in different regions of the body. The diagnosis of a disease in childhood brings sense of loss, threats, and especially the suffering, which, due to immaturity, is not expressed clearly. The objective is the meaning of illness to the child process. Cross-sectional study, observational analytical character with a qualitative approach, carried out with 16 children, ranging in age from 5 to 12 years in a children's Hospital, reference in serious illnesses and of high complexity, in Fortaleza/CE. The data were collected through semi-structured interview and free drawing technique with children. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the University of Fortaleza by No. 1508595. After a triangulation of the data, emerging three categories: ¿Entering into a new world¿; ¿Experiences of câncer¿;¿ Expectations for the future¿. The process of the illness goes beyond not having health, will change the life of the child, routine habits and customs will be replaced by monitoring tests, chemotherapy, treatments and possible surgical procedures. The child and his family deserve a special and differentiated service because the process of the illness is very difficult; However, the statement of death in childhood is indescribable. It is therefore of importance that the palliative care are perceived by the multidisciplinary team as something that came to add the service, because what you can see is that these resources are clearly still scarce health services, mainly in the area of Pediatrics. Give voice and meaning to these children is a way of understanding the dimension that cancer has on their lives and how to live this whole process, what are the most difficult points and what they want it to be done to improve all this period of transition. The design proved to be a complementary technique, that allowed the child to organize the information and express them the way your experience. This study was important to contribute to the studies on childhood cancer, because the professionals who work with these children can benefit by having the knowledge of feelings of fear, sadness and expectations surrounding the illness and treatment, so can work seeking to promote the mental health of these children. What they need, more than anything, is to be involved and have active voice in the whole process of illness. / O câncer é caracterizado pelo crescimento desordenado de células que invadem os tecidos e órgãos inteiros, podendo ocorrer metástases em diversas regiões do corpo. A diagnóstico de uma doença na infância traz sentimento de perda, ameaças, e principalmente o sofrimento, que, devido a imaturidade, não é expresso claramente. Objetivou-se compreender o significado do processo de adoecimento para a criança. Estudo transversal, observacional de caráter analítico com abordagem qualitativa, realizado com 16 crianças, na faixa etária de 5 a 12 anos, em um Hospital Infantil, de referência em doenças graves e de alta complexidade, em Fortaleza/ CE. A coleta de dados foi realizada mediante entrevista semiestruturada e a técnica do desenho livre com as crianças. O estudo foi aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa da Universidade de Fortaleza pelo Parecer de nº1508595. Foi realizada uma triangulação dos dados, emergindo três categorias: Adentrando em um novo mundo; Vivências do câncer; Expectativas para o futuro. O processo do adoecimento vai além de não ter a saúde intacta, irá mudar toda a vida da criança, hábitos e costumes rotineiros serão substituídos por exames de acompanhamento, quimioterapias, tratamentos e possíveis procedimentos cirúrgicos. A criança e a família merecem um atendimento especial e diferenciado, pois o processo do adoecimento é muito difícil; porém, o de perspectivação da morte na infância é indescritível. Por isso, é de suma importância que os cuidados paliativos sejam percebidos pela equipe multiprofissional como algo que veio para somar ao serviço, pois o que se pode perceber é que estes recursos ainda são nitidamente escassos nos serviços de saúde, principalmente na área da pediatria. Dar voz e significado a essas crianças é uma maneira de entender a dimensão que o câncer tem em suas vidas e como é viver todo esse processo, quais os pontos mais difíceis e o que querem que seja feito para melhorar todo esse período de transição. O desenho se revelou uma técnica complementar, que permitiu a criança organizar as informações e expressa-las da sua maneira a experiência vivida. Este estudo foi importante para contribuir com os estudos sobre o câncer infantil, pois os profissionais que trabalham com essas crianças podem se beneficiar ao ter o conhecimento dos sentimentos de medo, de tristeza e expectativas que envolvem o adoecimento e tratamento, para que, assim, possam trabalhar buscando promover a saúde mental dessas crianças. O que elas precisam, mais do que tudo, é serem envolvidas e terem voz ativa em todo esse processo do adoecimento.
